Fellow Fatties: Sympathy for Hardgainers?

I was fat growing up, lost weight, now I work to maintain a fairly healthy weight. I don’t expect others to do the same because I understand that health/fitness is not a priority to most people.

Sad, yes, but the fact is what it is.

Dude, don’t make fun of the way I look just because my teeth are a little fucked up. Fucked up teeth and a less-than desirable physical appearance are hardly the burden on society that fat fucks are.

I agree with that. But the people who don’t try hard enough to lose/gain weight also have no right to bitch and complain about how fat/skinny they are. Isn’t that what we’re talking about?

I mean, sure, if someone doesn’t have an interest in looking good or staying fit, more power to them. Just don’t swear there is nothing you can do about it. That’s what gets to me.

Fat physiques are the only ones that are actually repulsive to look at (barring the freakishly skinny). Everyone in the bodybuilding game is flawed and working toward an ideal from a less ideal starting point. I’d rather look decent all the way along than have to start from a place of gross obesity. A thin guy 3 weeks into his first bodybuilding program looks a helluva lot better than a fat guy 3 weeks in.

I disagree. I’d rather look at fatty lumpy flesh than boney flesh ANY day.

Ok, you’re right, I was slightly off the mark of the topic. Though it is different for someone trying to lose weight in an unhealthy food landscape as compared to a healthy one.

I think it’s important to mention that building muscle is way harder than losing fat. Lose fat? Sure, you’ll achieve it in some months. Gain muscle? It can take years…

yeah I should have prefaced my whole argument with “for me” lol as this is highly subjective.

Mate, I’m not taking the piss out of you, I’m stating a fact. If that’s actually you in your avatar - and I’m wondering why you consciously put it up for the world to see - then I’m sorry, you ARE ugly. I don’t mean to be a dick about it, nor am I trying to stick up for my overweight brethren, but I don’t know what the hell you’re doing maligning fat people for being ugly when you look like that. I’ve seen a few fat guys who, above the neck anyway, look like Tyson Beckford next to you.

And yes, get your teeth fixed, get rid of the Malcom NeXt goatee and those ridiculous specs, none of which is helping your cause. We’re all here because we want to look better (save a few powerlifters). Look, I’m not exactly the brown Brad Pitt either, but that’s why I’m on a diet.

Help yourself.

The issue that grinds my gears is when people assume they have a total understanding of something they’ve never experienced. Yeah, I was real fucking fat. My parents, who were also obese, raised me in a culture of food extravagance. I didn’t know anything different - More so, my best friend and next door neighbor growing up was able to see his ribs every single day, despite eating exactly what I did, if not more.

Fact is, I was never forced to understand the concept of nutrition and healthiness. “Yeah well you should have…” Well derka-derr. That wasn’t me consciously saying ‘Fuck my health, I loooooooooooove being fat!’

Further, as Deb alluded to earlier, there is no way to know what a person’s problem is. I like how everyone on these boards will stand up for depression and eat people alive who argue against it, because it’s an actual mental problem - guess what, the mindset of obesity and gluttony is too. These are often times actual mental ISSUES that people have - food for compensation, comfort, addiction, whatever, they’re all real.

Having a problem with food manifests in such a way that’s much more noticeable than something like being addicted to smoking cigarettes… or people who have manic disorder but are medicated.

It’s funny, everything else gets a pass on this site because it’s a “mental issue” but because the majority of people here were REALLY skinny growing up, someone being fat is only fat because they’re pathetic and weak pieces of shit.

All that being said, given how fat you were (which is a compliment at this point, considering how damn far you’ve come), wouldn’t you say that you had to overcome more of those obstacles than 99% of the people who are still fat? I can’t imagine what it was like to be as big as you and do what you had to do to look like you do now.

You did it. I expect most everyone else is CAPABLE of doing it as well. Whether or not they want to is a different story entirely.

Edit - Love the avi, btw.

I agree with this.

In fact, my wife grew up in a very similar household, with the same eating habits. She didn’t know any better.

The main difference is that she was REALLY skinny and it wasn’t until she got older that she started putting on weight. Now, she’s developed better (not great) eating habits and works out semi-consistantly. It’s a far cry from her old lifestyle, which is the most important thing to me.

Haha, first of all thanks, I fully believe that Check It Out is one of the greatest comedic masterpieces ever committed to a television screen.

I don’t know, the whole process is hard to describe, because it really all happened so fast… but not really. Hahaha. Initially I would just do things like cut out the HEAPING bowl of potato cheese soup and Mud Pie Pudding at our cafeteria my freshman year - Or eating only one 1/2 pound Hot Pocket before bed instead of 2. Things like that (I know it sounds ridiculous, lol.) Then eventually I would just keep making adjustments so progress kept happening.

I mean, there were a lot of mental ramifications that came from the whole experience, though… some problems just get replaced by others. Instead of being a lazy dude who binge ate too much, I’m now anally retentive about everything I do and get anxiety when I’m in certain situations that remind me of the person that I use to be, lol. So, for all that I know, my physical health was improved but who knows about mental health?

I’m not really sure where I was heading with this. People who pretend to work hard for something and don’t suck, whether you’re fat, skinny, black, white, retarded, deaf, blind, old, or any variation of “normal.”

I think everyone is capable of doing things as they see fit, but most people don’t have the fortitude and true determination (and balls) to actually do it. As Spider Loc once said, “You just wanna shine, you don’t wanna grind.”

Exactly, and when I’m sure she got to that point I’m guessing it was a confusing and frustrating time in her life (again, just guessing.)

It’s the old paradox… skinny people see fat people and think that they’re lazy and just don’t care. This is true and false. Also, fat people see skinny(in shape, normal, whatever) people and assume they have skinny genetics. This is true and false as well.

Again, while I’m not surprised that this extreme is so heavily endorsed on this site, it’s a little disappointing to see that there’s just such a degree of obliviousness to another person’s circumstances here.

Oh, and sorry Greg, I did read that totally out of context.

No problem man.

My whole family is overweight. My grandparents, mom, aunts, brother, cousins(not all my cousins but some)

Im the only real health conscious person in my entire extended family and definitely the only one with a gym membership(until recently)

I got my mom and my brother on a “diet” and workout program and they both dropped weight like crazy. I know a little bit about growing up in a non health conscious family.
