Fantasy Book Recommendation

Michael Whelan should do ALL covers. He’s great.
He did King’s The Gunslinger.

I still love The Earthsea trilogy. First book is called A Wizard Of Eathsea. Won a ton of awards in the 70’s when it was published. More about magic than sword fighting, but It has cool dragons and a good coming of age theme.

Some covers are off-putting.
it’s worth owning the books just for the covers and they’re a fun read.

Of course Frazetta’s fine…it’s the one at the top of this page I didn’t like.

almost forgot Karl Edward Wagner. check out the Kane(as in Cain and Abel) books.
Fritz Leibers Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser series are also great

Nards chk this/these books out

The Book I just purchased by the Author Chris Wraight is Swords of the Emperor. (2 books plus 2 short stories)

Suprisingly a very good read so far. Most of the stuff by Black Library is mediocre at best but well I found a gem in this author. This book is tied to the Warhammer world but in how he writes if you knew nothing about the background he fills in the Backstory verywell. Good character development as well.

The books on their own are called: Sword of Justice and Sword of Vengeance

Hope this helps.

BTW how you like White Wolf so far?
I’ll be starting it tomorrow as I need to finsih another book first.
White Wolf is a terrific book. I’m currently halfway through his Waylander trilogy, which is also excellent.

the Sandman Slim series by Richard Kadrey is modern Fantasy with some strange shit in it.

James Stark spent 11 years killing monsters in Lucifer’s arena for the entertainment of fallen angels and also being Hell’s hitman. Now he’s escaped back to LA where magic is loose, trying to avenge his girlfriend’s murder and hunt down Mason Faim, the black magician responsible for getting him sent downtown.
Some things go right, like beheading second-rate magician Kasabian whose head, mounted on a skateboard with legs, becomes Stark’s smart-mouthed sidekick. When ever Kas has a beer while watching porn just make sure there’s a bucket under him.
Some things not so right. He just can’t seem to find that asshole Faim. Instead he encounters Homeland Security agents working for a near-psychotic angel and some nonhuman, nonangelic beings called the kissi that make most people’s idea of demons look like Barney the dinosaur.

Resurrection sucks. Saving the world is worse.

Haha I don’t know how you guys can stand Gemmel. I read Legend, and seriously considered putting it down a quarter of the way through. The only book I enjoyed from him was The Sword in the Storm. Check it out. Also has anyone read the Prince of Nothing series? Or perhaps the Malazan Book of the Fallen?

I’m thoroughly enjoying White Wolf now and would like to hear why you don’t like Gemmell.

I read the first Malazan book, but with so many characters and how the story just starts right in the middle and no one’s back story is explained much I felt like I was in university studying again.
I mean there were many times where two people were talking and I didn’t know who they were and who they were talking about.
That could be partly my problem though, as in I’m not paying enough attention…but I’d say it’s twice as hard to keep track of the characters as it is with A Song of Ice and Fire.

I was too young to get into D&D but agreed that the artwork is often phenomenal.
