It was an ACTION movie. Shit, half of Arnold’s movies sucked plotwise, but the muscles and the explosions (and the occasional gratuitous boob shot) made up for it. I loved it and I can’t wait to see the next one!
I’ll agree with you on the CGI - that shit is annoying. But why hold a movie to a standard that it’s clearly not trying to meet?
It’s not that I’m trying to hold it to a standard it isn’t trying to meet; it’s that the standard it IS trying to meet is so low. I don’t expect much from action movies, but I expect them to try to reach SOME sort of standard. And whatever standard it is trying to meet, it must have fallen far short of even that dim expectation because I doubt no one strives to create a movie that sucks.
I expected it to be a bunch of mindless action and I was STILL let down.
There were some great scenes, but you know what would have been better? Great scenes, with me NOT being distracted by how shitty the rest of it was. Also, hated the ending. Felt like a bit of a cop out in some respect.
It’s not that I expect something incredibly mentally stimulating AND full of action, although, hey, that’d be fucking awesome actually, but rather that I expect what little plot there is to either be decent, or nonexistant. I don’t need them to write the next fucking 1984, I just need what they do have to not take away from the rest of the experience. If I want to get stupider while watching a movie I’ll watch Transformers.
This is what happens when you watch The Expendables too often. An otherwise highly-intelligent poster is reduced to monosyllabic insults when faced with a well-voiced opinion that differs from their own. Carry on.
I guess my standards for movies are like my standards for women, huh? LOL
I understand DB’s point but don’t necessarily agree, HOWEVER…
for the love of all things holy–is there anything left these days?!–can we find some REAL latino/a fucking actors so we don’t have to listen to some painful fucking accents? That “dictator” had the phoniest fucking accent I’ve ever heard. Ever.
I bet I could tweak the voice on my phone’s navigation to sound more authentic. A gringo would’ve done a better job.
A little laet to the game but I agree with DB. While I love seeing shit blow up there has to be something else to keep me interested. I thought it was terrible…glad I only saw it on Netflix and not in the theater.

I think with all the actors in that movie everyone seeing it is expecting a combo of all those actors best movies in 1 super awesome movie which is never going to happen for any genre. With that aside it was good but not great but with such high expectations good=not so good. I thought his last rambo was great so I was expecting something like that but with more known actors.
Rambo was great because he set it up in such a way that you absolutely fucking hated the bad guys with a passion after about 5 min of the movie. You wanted to see them get torn apart.
There was no emotion at all in Expendables. It was lifeless.
What the fuck??? If anybody went into this movie expecting some sort of well-developed plot, just slap yourself. It was sold as an action-junkie’s wet dream. With the amount of testosterone present, who the fuck wants to THINK??? Fuck, even with NO alcohol and a small 10 inch screen, I still loved this fucking movie! This hullabaloo is like going to see any of the Marvel Comics movies and expecting Oscar buzz. Let’s keep it real, people.
Charisma Carpenter will have my babies.
I would stay in the military if they issued me the AA-12.

I liked the razor blade I wanted a close kill scene with that. I knew going into the first that it wasn’t Shakespeare and I was only really dissapointed with the lack of screen time for everyone except Stathan and Stallone, I wanted more Crews, Lungrand, and Rourke. The rumors are Rock, and VanDamme are going to be in the sequel.
If you reword this a little, change some names and BOOM, the Dirty Dozen. A FAR superior film. My point is that the action film in general isn’t a braindead genre by any means, but films like this are quickly turning it into one. I want to see movies that are pure action sometimes, don’t get me wrong. But why does it have to be “mindless action”? Am I wrong to demand more from the film industry in this respect? And am I also wrong to demand more originality from Hollywood as well? I am sick and tired of the same remakes and the same, formulaic films being puked out of the studios year after year.
I saw Thor last night. You know what? I hated it. Why? Because I’ve already seen it. It’s the exact same movie as Ironman 1 and 2, all of the Spiderman films, The Fantastic Four, Transformers, and most likely will be the same as the Green Lantern.
I’m partial to Batman, so maybe I’m a little biased, but I think that Batman Begins, and the Dark Knight to an even greater extent, have shown that it’s possible to make a movie about a comic book character that still has some level of depth and intrigue without sacrificing action. On top of all that, the fact that virtually all of the special effects in those other movies are CGI, and thus make me feel like I’m watching a cartoon, cheapens the experience for me. I want to see REAL shit blowing up, and if a movie loses some sort of effect or it can’t properly be done without shooting every single fucking scene in front of a bluescreen, then it doesn’t have much to offer to me. Haha, I thought I was going crazy when I heard that guys accent. He’s Puerto Rican for Christ’s sake. He always sounded like a Latin guy in OZ and Dexter so how the fuck did he fuck up that accent?
I didn’t like Expendable’s very much. I get it’s an action film but the story sucked too much. And as the OP said, way too much Stallone/Statham.
I liked the last Rambo they did a couple years ago alot better.
