Looking at health insurance. Debating on whether to get maternity coverage with a plan, or just have a regular plan and go to a birthing center. Hm.
I haven’t a clue what a “birthing center” is.
I’d say get maternity coverage. A good one.
A few dollars extra every month for solid piece of mind during pregnancy is a BIG fuckin’ deal.
My coverage made it so there were no co-pays on dr. visits, ultrasounds, as well as the hospital stay when my little hombre was born. I wouldn’t trade my insurance coverage for a 10 inch trouser-hog. Tell you what.

I like it because I’m not a huge fan of hospital births (neither is she), and we have a good friend who is a doula (like a super birth coach basically).
Downsides- only one ultrasound. Difference in plan costs is about 50$/ month. It is just hard to eat that price.
I bet you could poll the whole US on who likes hospitals in general and the response in favor of them would be pretty low.
I get what you’re saying about a Doula, that whole concept seems cool and intimate and totally natural. I’m sure you’re well educated and know family/friends who have used this method in the past and they really dug it.
However,
Over a pregnancy you’ll have paid $500 extra over a ten month time frame to get adequate coverage for your wife. If there’s a hiccup in the pregnancy, anything from spotting blood to ocular migranes to elevated blood pressure and blood sugar, who will manage that? How will you pay for that? The way I was set up meant that I didn’t pay anything extra, not even a co-pay. To know that your partner can be seen, followed up, and appropriately monitored through their pregnancy is/was a big deal, to me at least.
Be advised Byukid, I’m not trying to sway you in one direction or the other, just letting you know about the “other side” and that it’s not the devil incarnate.

Don’t worry- we’re not full on hippy birthers or anything. The natural way has its appealing points, as does the hospital care. So we’ve got a few more things to weigh before we decide.
Dude, how are you so young and such a grown up?
Do you know how much easier my life would be if all college kids had their shit as together as you do?
