all that would do, if you have a private profile, is allow them to view it. And it gives them quicker access to pm you if they were so inclined to do so

I find creeper pms worse than creeper posts. I see it as being akin to irl. If some random guy grabs your ass in public it’s less creepy then when a stranger finds you alone and grabs your ass. (ok I know creepers on the interwebz are not at all like some guy finding you alone and grabbing you, but the sentiments are slightly the same).
In a thread, you can ignore it or someone else can deal with it it you’d rather not, creeper pms when ignored result in angry creepy pms, or you have to deal with them yourself. I’d much rather have Wol post a facepalm and move on.
