From 1986 - 1994 the average murder rate in NYC was 2269 PER YEAR!..this was at the height of the crack epidemic in NYC. This is when I was a teenager, it was grim. This was also when NYC was the crime capital of the country. Going out at night as a teenager with any popular brand of clothing be it Starter Jackets, Troop Jackets, 8 Ball Jackets, Signature or Starter Hats, Timberlands, Any polo or Hilfigger gear you were a major target no matter who you were…I am not embarrassed to say how petrified I was at times.
Now, NYC is incredibly safe from 2002 - 2008 NYC averaged 880 Murders per year…an amazing turnaround. NYC has a lot of issues ans crime is still present…but I am confident in saying that it is the safest large city in the nation.
Living through both eras of NYC, the change is amazing. All things are cyclical however, but I dont thing it will ever be as dangerous as the 80s and 90s.
$1500 is a clothes shopping trip over the weekend with no stay in any hotels during the duration of that time. If this was the 1800’s maybe but it’s 2010 almost 2011. lol @ $1500. sounds more like 4 pairs of jeans, 4 shirts, 2 pairs of shoes and a " I Love NYC " hat.

LOL!
…only to have it all stolen on the subway all before he can even find a 5x5 “apartment”.
The subways aren’t like that aren’t more… shits cleaned up in the past 15 years, big time.
They’ve done media coverage on how they redid the look of the subway cars…but I wasn’t aware they were “mug-free” now too? SWEET!
Not sure where you’re getting your knowledge, violent crimes has dropped way down over the last decade.
??
Can you or can you not still get your shit stolen on a subway?
“please answer the test question with a ‘yes’ or ‘no’.”
Yes you can still get mugged in an NY subway but I have the same odds of being robbed at Disney or any other place/state.
NY is actually one of the safest places to live now… all the bad asses moved down south.

It’s so funny man…I was just looking at a picture of the New Amsterdam Theatre from the 80s… i forgot what a shithole that area was back then.
You look at it now, it’s fuckin brighter than Tokyo and almost as safe as a suburb. It’s unbelievable… I really didn’t like Giuliani on the national stage, but there’s no doubt he was the best thing to happen to NYC in recent history.
Also found this quote- really “Back to the Future” ish if you think about it.
“In the 2005 book, Freakonomics, authors Steven Levitt and Steven Dubner provided a statistical argument that attributed much of the drop in crime in NYC to the legalization of abortion in the seventies, as they suggest that many of the would be neglected children and criminals were never born.”

Totally agree, you really cant complain about the results, espescially when David Dinkins left such a fucking mess for him.

WOW! it sounds really horrible to even make that kind of statement…but theres a lot of truth there.

Agreed. I have to give props where credit is due. Can we still talk about how your city smells and how shallow you all must be to have Paris Hilton as a role model?

Have you read “Tipping Point” by Malcolm Gladwell? He discusses all the little things that were done to turn that around during that period. Simple things such as keeping grafitti at bay with zero tolerance. Pretty interesting story.

I never read it, but taking a quick look at some of his points, rings true. Its human nature IMO to not give a shit about an enviornment if it looks like no one took pride in it in the first place. Which I believe is his point about grafitti, and the quality of life crimes that Giuliani took a stand on.

Ugh. That made me gag thinking about the combination of coke/skank drip down the back of the throat.

Its really not that bad, I promise. It’s ‘aged coke’. Good stuff. But definitely a bit pungent
