Elections

If one doesn’t pay taxes, why should one be allowed to vote? If one doesn’t vote, why should one be forced to pay taxes?
I’m a rich guy, I’ve got a private security company watching over me .

Say you’re a poor guy. You and I sign a contract. Then I say fuck you buddy and don’t do my half at the end of it. Then I tell you that if you tell anyone, I’ll come back with my little army and cut you into pieces. Just to prove a point, I break your wife’s arm. I tell you to show up at my factory for work the next day. You’ll be making ten dollars a week.

Then a little while goes by, and I say: I’m gonna bang that wife of yours, and you just keep working in my factory for nothin, and if anybody hears about this, you’re dead and gone.

I get away with it completely, and you have to just go fuck yourself. Right? Or, at best, you flee in the middle of the night with absolutely no money and no hope and no property. Right?

This sounds way better than voting and paying taxes. And if you don’t think it would happen, then do some reading on the Packingtown district.
You will end with shitty employees and a bullet in your head.
If he does that with all his employees, most likely

If it is just one employee, then there was a flaw

In an anarchical system, the poor guy might not have anyone to go too. As it is now, ‘if anybody hears about this, you’re dead’, is at least a necessary threat.

Orion, however will the lowly workers know they are being mistreated without a leader to tell them so? Certainly you don’t mean to imply they are capable of taking care of themselves?
Of course not.

There is no way they would look across the street and see the employer who pays ten times that and does not try to fuck their women

Impossibru.

Well, capitalism works great for a lot of things(cell phones, televisions, etc.), but there’s no way it could ever work for labor, military, police, or courts, is there? I mean, capitalism’s a fun game, but when it comes to the important things, there’s no way we should trust the market. That’s ridiculous. When it comes to the important stuff, socialism’s the only way to go. Socialism just doesn’t work when it comes to the frivolous things, or food. While socialism doesn’t work for those things, it’s there for us when it comes to the important things. Socialism’s got our backs when it comes to the important things, but it fails when it comes to frivolous things and food. Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

That’s logical, right?

Absolutely.

With cell phones and stuff we want people to work really hard and to innovate and compete but when it comes to important stuff like healthcare and education, we will entrust uncaring bureaucrats who 9-5 it.

Get with the programm citizen, that makes perfect sense for a lot of people.

Maybe. Maybe you’re just so rich you can get away with this and nobody can touch you. Nick thinks he’s a tyrannically oppressed slave, and he often does so–out loud–in terms that one would expect our poor hypothetical man to use. Why can’t Nick change his circumstances? Sheer, overwhelming power.

Get rid of government–go ahead. You’re not getting rid of sheer, overwhelming power. Though, you may well help it get into less civic-minded hands.

Yeah, because there is no precedent for incredibly miserable factory workers whose wives are raped by foremen, right?

Anyway, these workers can’t just walk across the street. They don’t got no po-lice. Their employer can just kill them for even thinking to abandon him.

We need to socialize healthcare because doctors are in a position of power and will take advantage of the rest of us. Education needs to be socialized because we will take advantage of good-hearted, altruistic educators. It may seem odd that we need socialism because the providers of a service will take advantage of us in some fields, while we will take advantage of the providers of a service in others, but that’s the way it is.

*Of course, when I say “socialism,” I don’t mean that, I just mean the way things are today. Socialism’s such a disgusting concept, I don’t know why I chose that word. After all, this is 'Murica and we don’t play the socialism game. Nope, fuck that. 'Muricans have the Pledge of Allegiance, and the Star-Spangled Banner to keep us safe from socialism. Socialism’s for brown, and yellow peoples in other countries, not us…no way!

**I’m 100% with the program.

You are perfectly right.

Capitalists are bullet proof.

All of them.

They do contemplate the results of their actions at all times, just not in the social sphere.

No, you are perfectly right. Capitalists are not humans, and thus don’t have any of that iniquitous cold-hearted venality that humans so often fall prey to.

Orion, do you not understand that the quality of altruism is automatically bestowed upon one by virtue of calling oneself “government,” while a man automatically becomes evil if he attempts to better himself?

I bet you wish you could find examples of government leaders doing bad things to people, don’t you? Good luck, sir. A government official, especially an elected one, would NEVER rape another man’s wife. A government official would NEVER put a man in a…for lack of a better word, camp…and not allow him to leave.

One of the most quixotically idealistic people whom I’ve read in my entire life bar-none, mocking straw-man idealism in an attempt to attack a realist.

Now that’s good.

That stings coming from one who often states, “homo homini lupus,” while arguing that we should hand our sovereignty to other men. Perhaps I am an idealist, but if being a realist means that I have to accept that kind of reasoning, I gladly accept the label.

Nothing more comfortable to work with than an enlightened egotist.

They blow the non enlightened egotists out of the water.

Every time.

You learned some basic history right?

The whole pesky 20th century too I assume?

@ Nic var , I hope you don’t take this like the rest of the flat head society but the whole thread is dumb . meaning no disrespect

Shit, you’re right. Governments did bad things, so they just shouldn’t be allowed anymore.

If I can find an example of capitalists doing bad things, can send capitalism down the same toilet?

Find some.

But, you know, you dont have to buy their products.

With governments you kind of do.

They will make you.

And you think that is a good thing.

Rockefeller, bad, bad Robber Baron.

Reduced the price of oil by 90%.

Carnegie, bad, bad Robber Baron.

Reduced the price of steel by 90%.

But, some workers were treated like shit every now and then.

The horror.

Except that, with anarchy, they can make you. And you can like what they sell a lot less. Like the rape of your wife, for example.
