5-month old Aussie-shepherd mix named Kaiea. And my girlfriend.
I have a kitty name Jewel and a mini weenie dog named Peanut.
Nasty little black-and-white feline named Milo.
It’s nice to see other cat and lizard lovers out there!!!
If anyone is ever looking for a GREAT reptile for a pet, get a bearded dragon. They are relatively friendly (as in the don't bite, even when you don't handle them frequently), are not picky eaters, and look really cool when they puff up and show their beard.
One question for all of the other owners of Maine Coons, do your cats act more like dogs? Both of mine play fetch, come when they are called, eat just about anything, and don't have the stereotypical 'aloof cat' attitude.
Renegade Dragon: I hope you have a big tank, my silver clown knife was 26 inches long when it died. That fish regularly kicked the crap out of my 14" oscar too. I can't wait to get my tank set up again! Do you know any sources for inexpensive fish tanks?
Yeah, I got the fish in the 80 gallon now, and I plan on getting a 150 gallon before the end of the year. For the best deal on tanks, I like to check out classifides in the paper, and garage sells, yard sells and such. Last year I saw a 150 gallon tank, with stand and cover for $150. God I wish I saw that this summer I would already have it. I won’t buy a tank from most pet stores, since you get royally ripped on the stands. You could also go to a Petco or somewhere and buy a 125 gallon tank or so for about $180 bucks, then hire a contractor or carpenter to build you a stand. Just make sure they know it’ll have to support well over 800 pounds.
Oh yeah, the Arowana sometimes get to 48" in captivity… If he gets even close to that he’ll be going in a pond.
The Maine Coone we have, is actually my girlfriends. But he is the mellowest cat I’ve ever seen. He just chills, and my girlfriend can do anything to him, and he doesn’t cry. She screws around with his ears, paws, puts hats and sunglasses on him, then sends pictures of it to her family.
I’ve also heard of Bengal cats playing fetch, but mine doesn’t. He does climb in the bathtub if it’s full of water though, he likes to swim.
Your bengal likes to swim? Cool! One of my Maine Coons - Mordred - has discovered the shower and now gets in with me. He gets out looking like a drowned rat (granted, that’s a 14 pound rat) and shaked just like a dog…
I'm actually looking for a corner tank, it's flat on the sides and has one large smooth curve for the front glass. I found a 54 gallon on line for about half of what it costs in the pet store. That's just a pipe dream though. As for the stand, I'm designing and building the shelves / entertainment center in my living room and the tank stand is going to be part of that unit.
I can't wait to get my tank set up again! My last one had a florida gar, clown knife, marbled bifur, oscar and a big brown something ... feeding time was quite a show!
Yeah, feeding my fish is great. Looking at the clown knife, it just looks like it would be a very poor hunter, but he’s actually probably the best predator in my tank. And the Silver Arowana, looks alot like tarpon.
Two great cats named Wiley and Peaches. Last week, I just lost one of the dogs that I grew up with as a kid
I also plan to eventually get another chameleon (likely a Panther) if I ever get around to building the ultimate terrarium for him (you don’t keep female chameleons unless you plan to breed them. The males are the larger, brightly colored, better pets).
I think I may win this contest. My wife is into horses (she is a “horse trader” and runs a boarding facility on our property), so we have the following:
25 horses (2 are ours, 8 are for sale, the rest belong to boarders)
5 dogs (a black lab mix, a rottie mix, an Akita and 2 true heinz 57 that are a little pit, a little lab and a lot of other things)
4 cats
2 pygmy goats
1 miniature horse
2 finches
3 dwarf rabbits
1 very big feed bill.
And the ‘Zoo Award’ goes to Mavrick!
What kind of horses do you own?
Most of the horses are Quarterhorses (both registered and grade). They are generally a little saner than many of the other breeds, and my wife looks specifically for safe (and I emphasize safe) trail horses for people looking simply for pleasure riding. There is more $ in performance horses, but my wife has an eye for this kind of horse, so you have to focus on your strengths (one thing a lot of people forget about).
I measured my Iguana, and amazingly… Galileo has grown 3 inches in two weeks, since he’s been in the large custom terrarium I built. It’s approx 5’ high, 5’ long and about 3’ deep. So now he’s 20"
I have two parakeets, twelve carrier pigeons, eight komodo dragons, two ants, six aardvarks, three pandas, one adult male sea lion, a tame seahorse, an earwig, seventeen wasps, four snails, one unicorn, and two very fat armadillos. I feed them all pizza.
