Depression and a T-Man

I know what you are going through.
Depression is something I get from my family.
at first I didn’t know what it was.
Fact is, you can be depressesed for real reasons, like: Job loss, ended relationships, death of a loved one etc. But these things are usually mourned in a healthy way and eventually conclude successfully.
Clinical depression is indidious and may start for a real reason or perhaps for no apparent reason at all. It just never ends.
Telling someone who clinnically depressed to snap out of it is the same as asking someone to run on a broken leg.
See a therapist, get a PROPER diagnoses as in one of the above posts.
The drugs are not fun, but often let you get past whatever in your life needs fixing.

All the 5-HTP, Tribex and Vitex advice is good. You may still need meds for a while.

I myself was on Prozac, Yuch … It stopped from jumping or climbing a tower or such, but sucked all my ambition, it probably saved my bacon and was a useful “supliment” in my case
to accomplish a goal.

I now do my best to keep things within my capabilities, still challenge myself, and now I recognize any onset before it grabs me and I use goals, exercise, supps like tribex etc. and diet ... for me if a carb fest seems to work, then I'll supp with 5-HTP, St. John's Wort and Ginkgo. A study I can not quote exactly, mentioned that in addition to improving bloodflow th the brain, Ginkgo actually allows the brain to make better use of seritonin you already have at hand. These are stratagies I use to head off a depression, but you might still require a period of some sort of anti-depressant, just be sure to be diagnosed properly and get the right one.

Oh yeah, do your best to force yourself to to good stuff for others, it really helps.

Schedule too full? Clean it up when you can.
It is not selfish to pull back on those things that deteriorate your health. You’re
no good to anyone much less your self if you
don’t take of yourself first.

Depression is real, depression can be cured!

reeshdawg- I can understand where you are coming from with your point of view, but in the case of SSRI’s, your view is incorrect. With many prescription drugs, they do indeed only treat the symptoms, and not the cause. take a lot of blood pressure medications, cold/flu medications, etc. But in the case of the SSRI, it is actually regulating the underlying cause of the mood disturbance- the overactive reuptake of the Seratonin into the synapses of the brain. this overactive uptake is what causes the ‘misfiring’ and overactive ‘firing’ of the neurons in the brain, causing the mood disturbance. the SSRI lessens the uptake of the serotonin, and stabalizes the mood.
Dont take this the wrong way, I see where you are coming from, but this is a rare case of the meds actually treating the cause.
have a good day!

I’ve been depressed many times in my life, but only for short periods at a time. I couldn’t understand someone who’s been depressed for a long time, but i’ll let you know what worked for me. I try and remember to be optimistic about life. A great NAVY SEAL saying during BUD’S training is “The only HARD Day is YESTERDAY.” I thought about it and realized every day was a new day and a new chance at opportunities. You are either a PART OF THE PROBLEM OR A SOLUTION TO THE PROBRLEM. If you can fix some of your problems, try to and sometimes ask people for help or advice. It really amazes me what other experiences my friends have. If you can’t fix it, put it on the “back burner” and wait till another chance presents itself. Also, make sure to be around people that have a positive personality and outlook on life, maybe someone that cheers you up when you’re around them. I have a great friend that no matter how bad my life is getting and for that matter hers, we can cheer each other up. Ditch any friends that are negative or bring your mood down. Good Luck!

Start eating lots of turkey for your primary protein source. It contains tryptophan which is converted to serotonin and will breifly decrease depressed mood. Stay away from reserpine substances and get any catecholamines or indoleamines in your system since they’ve been linked in studies to help depression. Of course everyone’s favorite Zoloft seems to do the trick for a lot.

my personal opionion, is that you will have to totally re-evaluate your life, and change what you are really not happy at all about…
