You can’t hunt deer with a rifle in Illinois. Shotguns, muzzle loaders, and centerfire revolvers only.

I have no idea about Wisconsin.
Really? Why?
I have no idea. In PA it usually has to do with population density (Allegheny County and other heavily populated counties don’t allow rifles), but in Illinois it’s a state-wide law. Doesn’t make sense to me since a good portion of the state is nothing but farmland. But, rules is rules.
Also, it honestly doesn’t matter. There are so many fucking awesome huge deer in IL you could go out armed with a spear and come back with a 10 point.

If my stupid ass can kill one with a bow, your average hunter could probably make do with a bag of rocks and a slingshot.

Kudos to you Steel, for bow hunting! I got nothing against guns, but I admire those who take the bow challenge.

Thanks ID. Both are fun but they’re obviously very different.

I found out about this law a while back and it’s totally ridiculous. All it does is force guys to spend thousands of dollars to rig up a fully rifled slug gun with a fancy scope which ends up being just as accurate and lethal out to 300 yards, about as far as anybody is shooting anyway. They solve nothing and just jack the cost of hunting through the roof.

Deer rifles are very legal in Wisconsin, and I would suggest a 308.

Do you have any idea about the reasoning behind it?

Not really. I know the deer population in Wisconsin is historically very high. This past season (maybe the past 2) have been bucks only, but that is because the population a few years back was out of control and they went overboard handing out tags. I would assume it’s similar in Illinois, and I know the rifle ban is an actual law and not a temporary thing.

My guess is it’s idiot legislators attempting to outlaw the “evil black assault rifles”.

The claim is because of population density, but you can easily outfit a modern blackpowder for 200 yards and they are legal. Some of you guys must be talking in feet not yards, a 12 gauge shooting 3-1/2 mags with a rifled sabot is not accurate much over 100 yds.

So is that dense woods or farmland?
Dense woods mainly.

I knew that about IL. IL and especially Chicago have some pain in the ass gun laws. I’m almost positive WI allows rifle hunting for two weeks out of the year.

To be honest, I didn’t know that terrain mattered that much in choosing a caliber. As time goes on I was planning on hunting in Michigan and other midwest states.

I hunt whitetail in MN, have used .308 in the past. It’s got more than enough penetration for whitetail and is satisfyingly accurate. My girlfriend uses .243 and she’s a deer’s worst nightmare with that caliber.
This coming season I’ll be giving my brother’s AR a go. He doesn’t have a .308 upper for it yet so I’ll be taking a shot with .223  We’ll see how that goes.

I know some of you out there are hunters. I’m looking to start deer hunting myself and wondered what caliber you and rifles you guys use. I think I’m leaning towards 30-06. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
The same 30-06 in my family has killed deer with three generations. MN and WI.

The past season was NOT bucks only (although I think it was in certain areas). The guys I went with had doe tags and shot a few.

See that’s why we have to hunt down those destructive fuckers. Next year I’m planning on getting a permit to reduce crop damage, they are eating the hell out of my Sumac and Quaking Aspen.

Exactly.
Not to mention the numbers of highway human deaths these hoofed assholes cause by not observing safe crossing practices.

It is a very real problem where I live. I have forty five minute commute at 5:30 am, through woods and farmland that is a veritable gauntlet. Just replaced my truck because I have had four deer collisions in the last four years.

I read stats that say an average of 100 highway deaths occur yearly because of deer. One article I read said you can lessen your chances of death by leaning against your driver side door (so the upright holding the windshield becomes a barrier) as you drive through known deer country.

Population control for deer is very necessary.

Does it ever get old being an insufferable liberal?

Most of the dedicated deer hunting slug guns are in 20 ga, and while 300 yards is probably an exaggeration 200-250 is easily doable. Check out the Savage Model 220F.
