Dear Atheists/Non-Believers

No what channel does it come on?

It actually ran on PBS a few years ago. Fr (Now Bishop) Barron is great. He even has a Youtube channel were he comments on current events and other random things.

It was a ten part series with hour long episodes. I think you can find it on amazon for around $40.

This is an interesting question.

On one hand, you’d think the idea of life after death, and being reunited with loved ones, would make it an easy “yes.”

On the other hand, the threat of hell has to be terrifying for atheists.

A great 20th century atheist philosopher, A.J. Ayer, once had a near-death experience. His description of that experience sounds remarkably like hell.

I was confronted by a red light, exceedingly bright, and also very painful even when I turned away from it. I was aware that this light was responsible for the government of the universe. Among its ministers were two creatures who had been put in charge of space. These ministers periodically inspected space and had recently carried out such an inspection. They had, however, failed to do their work properly, with the result that space, like a badly fitting jigsaw puzzle, was slightly out of joint.

A further consequence was that the laws of nature had ceased to function as they should. I felt that it was up to me to put things right. I also had the motive of finding a way to extinguish the painful light. I assumed that it was signaling that space was awry and that it would switch itself off when order was restored.

Unfortunately, I had no idea where the guardians of space had gone and feared that even if I found them I should not be able to communicate with them. It then occurred to me that whereas, until the present century, physicists accepted the Newtonian severance of space and time, it had become customary, since the vindication of Einstein’s general theory of relativity, to treat space-time as a single whole.

Accordingly, I thought that I could cure space by operating upon time. I was vaguely aware that the ministers who had been given charge of time were in my neighborhood and I proceeded to hail them. I was again frustrated. Either they did not hear me, or they chose to ignore me, or they did not understand me. I then hit upon the expedient of walking up and down, waving my watch, in the hope of drawing their attention not to my watch itself but to the time which it measured. This elicited no response. I became more and more desperate, until the experience suddenly came to an end.

Ayer’s thoughts on the experience?

My recent experiences have slightly weakened my conviction that my genuine death, which is due fairly soon, will be the end of me, though I continue to hope that it will be.

A perfect example of an atheist hoping there is no God, as no God would entail no hell. I think many atheists fall into this category, which is why they’re so hostile to the mere notion of God.

If you Google A.J. Ayer, you can learn a lot more about him and his experience. It’s fascinating stuff.

In a place where God exist, why must an atheist go to hell? Is it because he did not believe in that god, was it because he committed bad deeds, or is there some other reason?

Since atheists are not people committing immoral acts, they are simply good people doing good things that just do not believe in an afterlife. Nothing sinister about that. Also consider, that there are lots of people who don’t believe in the same god or afterlife scenario. For example, a buddhists doesn’t believe in the Christian god.

So, what is the criteria for going to hell, and why is that correct?

I think most people are atheistic, or agnostic, because of the lack of evidence and just using logical reasoning. It has nothing to do with fear or some emotional disturbance with religion. It doesn’t come from a place of hate, darkness, or negativity.

-It often does seem to come from a place of hate. Why else would an agnostic or atheist try to convince believers they are wrong? He doesn’t believe in anything, so what would be the point? A Christian tries to help others follow God because he has been commanded to love others.

Depends,is Satan a cool guy?

Here’s a reasoning why free will under christianity doesn’t make sense imo

From the story with Peter (before the rooster crows today, you’ll have denied me 3 times) we know that god knows that

  • god knows the events will occur before they do

Also we know that

  • god cannot be wrong, since he’s all knowing

If he knows what I’ll do before the time for me to choose to do so comes, and he cannot be wrong, doesn’t that mean that all my actions are pre-determined?

And you are 100% certain that a small group from 2,000 years ago accurately recorded the sum total of the history and desires of that God (the writing of which wasnt started until 40 years after his death and finished after much deliberation some 400 years later), without leaving anything out, and that the work has remained completely untainted by man, and that you have read the correct translation from the original Latin (and that nothing was lost or converted in the translation), and that you have interpreted it correctly?

Nope. I don’t even know where you would get that idea from what I said.

If I let my three year-old play in my front yard by herself, I know she would end up in the road eventually. I wouldn’t have to push her into the road.

You don’t know,you are guessing.There is a chance,as small as it may be,that you are wrong.In god’s case,he cannot be wrong

I’m just wondering where your “certainty” that you understand the entirety of the will and mind of God comes from. It seems to be the Bible based on your postings, so I am curious how you arrived at “certainty” that the Bible accurately reflects all the desires of God, given that it is (and always has been) a man-made book.

I never said anything like that. I said only that I’m certain God is correct. I’ve never said anything remotely close to, “I understand the entirety of the will and mind of God.”

True. It was just an example to show how sure I, who possess none of God’s powers, can be of the actions of another without having to cause those actions. I can’t explain everything about God.

Because you quoted Matthew 22:37-38…

In Futurama he is pretty cool.

And…?

Of course I hope an afterlife exists where all my loved ones are there. AC/DC plays concerts for us (despite singing songs like Highway to Hell). Dr. Pepper flows from the fountains. We can drink all day and never be hungover or vomit. We play our videogames on massive big screens. Kim Kardashin can’t talk but can still use her mouth for other things. No one has to drug the women like Bill Cosby because they are always down for whatever.

Now which belief system is most likely to get me that set up?
