I went to my local arcade every Saturday in the late 80s and they had some sort of trade magazine that the boss would stick up in the window that let you know about upcoming games.

That was neat…but when I saw the ad for Tetris I giggled and shook my head. This was about 1989 I guess, and I laughed that a game where you pay a quarter to stack blocks would come out. I mean I’d played Pong in the 70s and had seen crap Atari game sin the early 80s so the idea of something as simple as this daring to come out was mind boggling.

Then it went gang busters.
Tetris was one of the few great things to come out of the Soviet Union. We had it in 1984. It was even more popular to us then it was to you guys here in America.

And vodka. You guys totally had vodka all along.

Tetris without vodka is like , well, I don’t know what to compare it to but I’m sure it’s pure shit.

True, but Russia has had the best Vodka around since before the Soviet Union so it doesn’t count. Tetris was one of the few things that was truly ours that was worth having. It does go very well with Vodka, though. I had some great times in college playing Tetris and drinking Vodka.

In winter the average Japanese spends 30 minutes a day in a scorching 42 degree bath – aiming to become yudedako, or “boiled octopus.” The tradition results in heart attacks for the elderly. Kenji Tanaka, 83, was unconscious for 20 minutes. “I don’t know a better way to go!” he quips.
