He really took a jump in that department several seasons ago, definitely uped his retardation by multiple levels. With that being said, I actually think the rest of the family has stayed mostly the same. They went out of their usual comfort zones in singular episodes, though

I would disagree on the basis that making them more retarded has not made them funnier. The old seasons of the Simpsons were hilarious, the early episodes of Family Guy as well. Since then, episodes (with both shows) have simply become giant throwaway gags, no lasting humor or satire.
