I don’t think so. I picked up my cat(RIP) by the nape before, didn’t appear to be painful for him, more like a reminder of what their mommy would do when they were a kitten. Just imagine him thinking “What did I do now?”

I don’t know about cats, but if you pinch a horse’s lip in a similar way it goes completely still and complicit. Apparently that’s down to endorphin release, so the horse is having the time of it’s life.

Yes, it goes back to them being kittens. Any time I saw a mother cat pick up a little one by the back of the neck, they just went limp until they were put down.
