Country Music

I really love the alt-country stuff too – Son Volt, Whiskeytown, Wilco’s first album, The Jayhawks, some of Ryan Adams’ stuff…

Yes, all that above. I love Ryan Adams so bad. So. Damn. Bad.

Did anybody mention Jamey Johnson (in color) or Chris Knight (love and a .45, sorryville)?

I don’t think I saw Cory Morrow or early Pat Green stuff either.

And Lyle Lovett is an excellent Texas artist though he doesn’t fit the Reckless Kelly, Robert Earl Keen, college stuff.

I consider myself an encyclopedia of country music (except the new nashville stuff). My radio stays tuned to classic country stations. I also love the Texas country/alt-country/whatever you want to call them scenes. I’m a HUGE Willie Nelson and Robert Earl Keen fan. Many of my favorites have already been mentioned and living in a college town in Texas I’ve seen most of them live and they all put on great shows (with the exception of the time I saw Jason Boland right after he sobered up, haha).

Adam Carroll is one that nobody mentioned. He’s an AMAZING songwriter and has drawn comparisons to legendary songwriters like Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt and John Prine.

Slaid Cleaves is another good one…he’s from Maine but moved to Austin.

South Austin Jug Band is a great one if you like bluegrass. They’re amazing instrumentalist. The Ballad of Eddy Mullet is a really funny song.

David Allen Coe is definitely a badass. The amount of songs that he has written over the years is mind boggling. For a short while around 2000 he was in a country metal band with three of the guys from Pantera. It’s pretty tough to beat “You Never Even Called me by my Name”.[/quote]

“You Never Even Called me by my Name” was written by Steve Goodman and John Prine, two guys who could charge Coe for lessons when it comes to songwriting.
