Best Sitcoms, huh?

 1. Seinfeld

 2. Curb Your Enthusiasm

 3. The Bob Newhart Show

 4. MASH/All in the Family (tied)
5. I wouldn’t rank it number 1, but it was definately one of the best. The last season was weak and the final episode sucked. But they get props for knowing that they were getting weak and stepping down.

 6. I never saw more than a few episodes but they were pretty awesome.

 7. Was just a wee lad when this on, but it was my parent’s favorite. I thought the “it was all a dream” finale was weak.

 8. Can’t stand Mash as I all I ever think about is punching Alan Alda in the face.

Deserving of honorable mention:

 1. The Simpsons. The last 15 years have been just awful, and have thoroughly sullied it’s reputation. But at its peak it was the greatest there’s ever been or will be.

 2. Arrested Development. The bard said something to the effect of “The fire that burns hottest burns out quickest.” I don’t think it could have gone much past three seasons, and their strength came from their go for broke attitude. I did not like the new-direct to netflix episodes at all.

 3. Married with children. Would be better without the fox laugh track.

I’ve never watched an entire episode of Seinfeld or Curb Your Enthusiasm so I can’t call them 1&2. Just couldn’t get interested. Big fan of MASH and All in the Family. Enjoyed the 2nd Newhart series with Larry and his brother Daryl and his other brother Daryl.

I forgot #4. Deadwood. Was funny as hell and had some of the best lines of dialogue ever. And a Pinkerton gets beaten almost to death. What’s not to love?

It really grinds my gears when people talk about the last Seinfeld episode in a negative light. If you didn’t like it, great. But it wasn’t meant to be the funniest episode of all time, and I think you’d be hard pressed to find any sitcom that had a finale that was funnier than any of its previous episodes. The episode was meant to pay homage to all the great characters that MADE THE SHOW throughout its 9 seasons. They brought back characters that weren’t seen or mentioned in years. The episode was meant for fans to be able to reminisce about the great episodes of the series. In that light, the last episode was perfect.

And if we’re getting into cartoons, Family Guy (in its prime) was waaaay funnier than the Simpsons.

But it wasn’t funny. And they already had several flashback episodes, one of which featured a montage with that over played Greenday song.

Family Guy is awesome, and over it’s run has been consistently funny, for about 4x as long as The Simpsons was funny. However, Family Guy is derivative, and most of the characters are just generic types. The Simpsons has 100x the characters, almost all of which are actually developed and rounded. Also the flashback/day dream sequences or whatever you call them in Family Guy (borrowed from The Simpsons) are just a bunch of random stuff and have little to do with the story, unlike the dream sequences in The Simpsons.

In short, Family Guy’s good but they’re standing on the shoulders of giants.

Have any of you Americans seen a British sitcom called Peep Show?

It’s really fucking funny, but quite twisted. Definitely worth a watch if you like black comedy

I could not agree more. Back when The Simpsons was good (seasons 3 - 9ish) it was unbeatable.

Are you British then? All my British friend love The Simpsons. When my family went over to visit in the 80’s I loved The Black Adder, but I haven’t seen it since so have no idea how it holds up.

Scottish mate, yeah.

Black Adder’s really good! It’s stood up to the test of time quite well I think so you should give it a watch. You’d find it online pretty easily, I’d expect.

I left off the animated shows because I don’t, arguably, consider them true sitcoms. There is no acting just creative writing and voice overs. Admittedly, the writing in Family Guy was brilliant.

 • Trivia: I’ve never watched a single episode of The Simpsons.
That cost you some interweb points

Never watched Peep Show. Loved Are You Being Served?, Keeping Up Appearances, Fawlty Towers, Waiting for God, As Time Goes By, and Last of the Summer Wine(37yrs and 295 episodes).
Doc Martin is great also.

If People are into British comedy, then the Alan Partridges series are a must watch.

Black Adder, Extras and The Office are offcourse classics.

to be honest, if that’s the kind of comedy you like then you probably wouldn’t like Peep Show. It’s REALLY dark at times

I like a lot of different types. It can be dark as a rodent’s rectum in Satan’s basement as long as it’s good.

I used to love Red Dwarf but I cringe when I watch it now. It hasn’t aged well.

Peep Show is fucked up, especially that episode where he knows something bad happened the night before but can’t quite remember what until the very end.

Spaced was good too.

There is a part two to this as well, but this has some good points about why it’s not the Simpsons that has changed really, but instead the viewers and the culture around it. This has made it seem like it’s ‘prime’ years has better episodes than now.
