Article was sent to me via email. You can google the first paragraph and it should pop up. Most of the information is in the range of accurate(within a few percent) from what I’ve looked up.
The number 30,000 appears pretty widespread across journalism/newspaper stories over the past 5 years or so. I’ve seen it at least a dozen places. The number is approximately correct and stems from the FBI and CDC databases, which you can search. I don’t know about the % for law enforcement, but the suicide % is approximately accurate. There are near 20,000 suicides.
EDIT–according to the FBI, there were 13,300 murders reported to all agencies in 2014 (last year with complete data), and ~10,300 in cities (not sorted by weapon type). Not sure what year the data in the article in question is referring to but it is at least in the right ballpark. The number for California gun murders is from 2014. Upon checking, the murders with a gun is 8,103, so significantly more than the article reports but it is very probable that a statistical error was made somewhere. There are problems with data collection and reporting practices because of different agencies.
Was just to lazy to research in order to put my mother’s comments about the NRA, ‘assault weapons’, gun control , etc in perspective for her. She sound like a Pelosi campaign flyer on some issues.
True story. I love Chicago! It is probably my favorite big city, been numerous times and every time it is a blast.
In related news, a while back a professor published a paper on the “sphere of influence” of gun death in Chicago. Turns out 90% of the gun crime is related to essentially 10% of the population there. Go figure.
If you’re even in town again, let me know and I’ll buy you a beer.
I find this intriguing: “If I had blue-sky data and a bunch of money, I would really treat it [gun violence] like an infectious disease. I would do what we did with AIDS in the ’80s and ’90s, which is where you find a case—someone gets shot—you flood that part of the network with services,” Papachristos says. “So, God forbid, you get shot, people show up–they learn about you, they check you in. What do you need? Oh, you have kids? Where are your kids, who’s watching them? What do they need? Are they in school? Do you need help?”
“You can do what we did with contact tracing and service support for people who had HIV in the early stages. That’s how we worked needle exchanges. If we did that with violence, especially in smaller cities–Chicago’s always going to be a huge challenge–but in New Haven, where if we have 30 homicides a year it’s a bad year, there’s no reason you can’t do that with every one. There’s no reason you can’t get to know everything there is to know about those families with the resources that already exist and channel things accordingly.”
I don’t think they have the resources, they have two sets of enemies the establishment authority and rival gangs. 4 generations ago those kids would work on contruction, manufacturering, make a living wage, and be able to afford taking care of family. Manufacturering isnt dream job trust when I get off work i move like a 70 year old man, but i make 55a year, got insurance single no kids etc. I believe that growing up around violence, poverty, rewire brain . These guys are stone face killers in their teens, when i was their age i always had job because a job was freedom, CAR. I grew up in a low crime area , had a stable home. All my worries were was lifting and girls, i also got up at 5 am to lift and twice a week unload truck at grocery store. I also had freind who’s father was always in prison, poor health care, loved sports but couldn’t afford to joinall the sports, his grandmother would by him football cleats, and track shoes. Poor health care he had some seizures which embarrassed him so much he dropped out ot high school, and when dad was free, he eat all the good food, took money from moms welfare check to go to bar. Anyway my friend isnt doing well in life.
Absolutely I will. It would a great deal of fun and Chicago is home to both great bars and great breweries.
That is exactly the professor I was thinking of! I couldn’t remember where I read it. Fascinating research that really belies the whole gun control debate, or at least a sizable chunk of it.
Where were you when people give me shit for saying Dwayne the Rock johnson, and Stallone should be president an vice-president? Anyway better slam some surge, go to gym.
Okay one thing before i workout look at Somalian pirates were originally fisherman, than the whole world fished out the waters, but it help to be an asshole in first place. Alot of these Islamic extremists are just killers, trying to make themselves martyrs.
