Can You Do 85% 1RM Five Times?

A friend of mine read an article by CW that talked about doing 85% of your 1RM for five reps.
He said that there is no way the average trainee is going to be able to get five reps with 85% of his 1RM.
It seems to me that while its challeging its not unreasonable to expect most people to be able to get 5 reps with 85% of their 1RM. I have never really thougth about it so I didnt pay attention to it in my training
Any thoughts?

I think I answered my own question I found a table that suggests that 5 reps is just about 85% of your 1RM. Also I put in what I could do five times and it gave me what my max is and it was what I expected. Thinking out loud…back to drinking red wine.

Depends on your fast twitch fibre ratio amongst other things. Some athletes may only be able to do a couple of reps, others might be able to do 10 at 85% its not an exact science.
