Okedoke. Just wanted for things be clear…

Of course, I completely disagree with you, and I believe that a society without any economic safety nets would send us back to pre-Historic times fairly quickly (any police or military force would eventually be unable to contain the violence and social unrest, as proven several times in history where an Economic downturn went unchecked), but by now I know there’s nothing I can do to change your mind, so I won’t even attempt…

I would steal and kill to feed my family if required.

Society needs a safety net because most people would do the same.

Exactly my point. Thank you for putting it so well – I couldn’t have said it better myself.

C’mon gents, the alternatives are not ‘safety net’ or ‘chaos’. The alternatives are freedom or slavery.

Do we want a safety net similar to the Roman Empire? This led to decay, and eventual destitution. A safety net saps our desire to excel. Its just like welfare.

And Zap, robbing to feed your family is understandable. I suppose that if times became very desperate, I’d probably be okay with some soup lines and so forth. We just can’t stomp all over the human spirit for the sake of ‘survival’. The question becomes: ‘survival’ as WHAT? Mice?

Sorry, won’t bite. I would, however, recommend you find some other metaphor, or people might start thinking funny things about you:

"
The Romanticist heroic Viking ideal and the Wagnerian mythology also appealed to the Germanic supremacist thinkers of Nazi Germany as reflected, for example, in the runic emblem of the SS, the neo-Nazi youth organization Wiking-Jugend, and its Odal rune symbol (see also fascist symbolism). The Norwegian fascist party Nasjonal Samling used viking symbolism and imagery widely in its propaganda
"

Wasn’t trying to get you to ‘bite’, Doc. You see, I can’t seperate economics from philosophy. In previous threads, I’ve written about how a man’s work is sacred, his property is sacred, his SELF is sacred. To allow yourself willingly to be taxed is a betrayal of all that. But I digress…

If you want to try to convince me (though why you would want to escapes me), you need to show that a Keynesian society is better for humans in the long run. When I see the people of Europe, who run and hide like mice at the sound of a bellicous dictator or islamic thug, and those people live in ‘managed’ societies, I mourn for their souls. They traded their freedom, their spirit, their humanity, for the safety of a managed society. They make me think of Nietsche’s Ultimate Man. (NOT the Ubermensch.)

If ‘survival’ means that I become a trembling, play-it-safe, harmless little rodent, then I will be happy to go live in the Canadian Rockies, where I will mourn for what used to be men.
