British Accents

I live in Gods Own County, also known as Yorkshire, and it constantley amazes me just how different the accents and slang terms can be just within this relativeley small area. Barnsley, Sheffield and Rotherham lie within a 20 mile radius of each other and you can pick out strong regional differences with ease!

And even in my home town of 250,000 people there are recogniseable differences between each borough or village!

I was once told that these pronounced differences are a result of groups of people being concentrated near certain resources or industries i.e. coal mining, textile factories, with relativeley little internal relocation within the country, hence specialised ways of speaking were concentrated amongst that population and thrived in that particular area.

By the way have any of you non-UK lads and lasses heard of a fantastic band called the Arctic Monkeys? Prizes for whoever knows what a “Mardy Bum” is?!

I’d seriousley recommend anyone interested in new music or British culture to give these guys a listen. The album is basically a guide through being young and working class in Britain today, and sounds bloody ace!

The Arctin Monkeys have all the attitude of Oasis with none of the talent, and Oasis aren’t particularly talented. They should have their instruments confiscated.
Anything by The Streets is 10X more representative of British youth than the Craptic Monkeys. Plus Mike Skinner’s accent is not bad if you wanna try and imitate one.

No it doesnt - is sounds shit and FYI the rest of the country looks down on cockneys as the dregs of society.
They should all be shot.

On a brighter note i like a ‘gentle’ scottish accent on women, in addition to the southern states of the US. Just does it for me every time. ;o)

My accent is a reasonably well documented Midland accent, although it wasnt on the accent map previously. Ill see if i can upload something.

I don’t know what’s hotter about Kate Beckinsale, her looks or that accent (or the latex).

I guess the looks. You put that accent on a cow, and it just isn’t the same, but damn she is hot.

WHAT?! You mean that nice middle class boy who pretends to be a cockney geezer?

The last thing you want to imitate is an accent that someone else already immitates! Skinner’s “mockney” accent is shite. He was raised in Brum, an area with a very distinctive regional accent, but speaks with a strong London “cockney” accent. Listen to his normal accent at the beginning of the song “Fake Streets Hats.”

Now don’t get me wrong here, I think Skinner is a Ledge. Love the lyrics and I admit he is representative of lots of people in this country.

As for the Monkeys’s I should have said that they represent working class Northern youth. Maybe Im biased cos I grew up in the same area, went to the same boozers and experienced the same stuff that they sing about. I’d also say give them a try live, they’l blow you away pal.

Its been said before but every now and then a band does come along that captures the mood of a generation: Stone Roses, Oasis and now the Arctic Monkey’s.

Im not saying they’re the most talented or grounbreaking or whatever but they get an indie disco bangin like no-one else out there. Theres nothing like hearing Dancing Shoes comeon when you’ve had a skinful and your with your mates and everyone starts going mental!

Good banter anyway in this thread, I just cant belive the amount of you who like the cockney accent!!!

I’m a scouser so my accent is recognised where ever i go in the UK and apperently we have the most distinctive accent because ours is the only one thats getting stronger. someone mentioned before about how everyone else is starting to take on that estuary english one and its true except for chavs who are all trying to sound like either mike skinner or ali G.

A lot of people in other countries think that the beatles had scouse accents but they really didn’t, yeah you could tell they were from Liverpool but all their accents were very mild compared to most parts of the city.

its strange how accents can make people sound i mean brummies always sound a bit thick, most scottish accents sound agressive and im told scouse makes you sound untrustworthy (is this true?)

and why is it so hard for people to impersonate a liverpool accent? the best impression ive ever heard is mike myers which is near perfect…thats probably because hes got family in liverpool though.

The BBC news type accents are great. You can listen to the BBC world service stream from your computer. As a bonus, it’s one of the best news sources out there.
Does anyone else think it’s a bit off that the majority of English dialogue gets SUB TITLES (for God’s sake!) on American TV. I saw somw program the other day on UFC & the two Brits had running sub titles. I mean, come on …
