Dark Tower series is probably Kings greatest IMO

I read the first one when it came out in the 80’s and only took 20 years to finish.
That will probably be me. I do not read fiction very much at all. I read a lot just things like strength journals and nutrition books. Maybe I will have to devote a little more time to this and knock it out.
Lol, no it took that long cause it took King that long to finish it
I have wanted to read this series for a while. Aren’t the books ridiculously long?
Maybe. I read fast so I am not a good judge of that.
I meant as far as page count, like 1000+ pages per book.
No, the first one is about 250 pages give or take. The rest are in the 600-800 range.

It’s not exactly brain busting material lol, but if you like fantasy books the Inheritance series (4 books) was surprisingly good. I used it as light bedtime reading. It’s one of those series I hope my kids will be enthralled in.

Also Game of Thrones is another more adult fantasy series. I’m midway through Clash of Kings.

Hey man who ever read half the books they had to in High School?

You guys ever read/heard of Scott Lynch and his Gentlemen Bastard series, Lies of Locke Lamora, and Red Seas under Red Skies?
I enjoyed those. The third installment is out later this year.

You actually read half? I never opened them. Watched the movies if they were available.

Me.

All of them in the first two weeks but that is neither here nor there.

But, come on, Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451?

Heathen, barbarian, scum.

You should not even post here, you should read.

Dark Tower books were great, up until Book 5( around the time Stephen had his accident). He hasn’t been the same since :(. On a related note, has anyone read the books Stephen wrote as Richard Bachman? Running Man, The Long Walk, Blaze. They’re pretty awesome I think.

Thats my take on it, he wrote a book though, I think it was called “On writing” that was non fiction and I kind of liked it.

And just if someone else has not read Fahrenheit 451, there is also !984 and Animal Farm, which are, gasp, Science Fiction.

You really, really need to have read those.

Ya, seriously.

Well maybe Animal Farm is not sci-fi, but there is a funny thing happening if a sci-fi novel becomes to popular or cuts too deep, then, suddenly, it is not sci-fi anymore, but serious literature .

Fuck that, science fiction is about “what if” scenarios and some serve as a warning if current trends are projected into the future.

Labeling it as serious literature and making kids to read it in school just makes sure that as few people as possible read those books and thats bad, because they should.

Ah, and Brave New World.

Somehow, much more predictive than 1984, though the US does its best to prove me wrong.

edit: “Brave New World” was a quote from one of Shakespeares plays.

Now there is something one could read too.

That book is like 170 pages. You’ll burn through it in no time.

Just read The Only Thing Worth Dying For. A+ and good insight into unconventional warfare and how bureaucracy can risk lives in battle.

What you did thar I SEE IT.

Cause I read the synopsis.

A few months back, A Mercy (by Toni Morrison) was recommended to me by someone whose opinion I highly regard.

Arguably the most powerful book I’ve ever read, unquestionably top-5.

edit - actually, “moving” would better capture my sentiment/reaction

Its really isn’t though.

Its even got a bit of “adventure” to it but more than anything, I now see why Morrison is so highly regarded (and rightfully so)

Its also a quick read, which I tend to prefer lately.
