I did a 3 rep max 6 months ago, and my elbow is still pissed off lol.
how old are you @rise80?
I am 39
I watched a documentary on Ronnie Coleman the other day on Netflix. That poor guy! He’s beat to hell man and it’s all from pushing as heavy as possible during his competition years.
To anyone that thinks that best way to be all you can be is to push at max weight all the time, I highly encourage them to take a hard look at The King. The body destroying aftermath of that shit is heartbreaking.
Also take a look at Dorian Yates. He was on the JRE podcast last year being completely honest about his steroid use, lifting, etc. Good stuff but he too is a broken man just trying to pick up the pieces after years of abuse.
But truth be told about bodybuilders, they arent so much about the single reps but do move massive amounts of weights and tons of reps.

Yeah, if I’m remembering correctly, Ronnie said he was squatting close to 800lbs regularly, and actually did 800lbs for like 3 reps, and said “I could’ve got 5”. They are beasts for sure! Or at least they were…
I can’t imagine ever loading up that much weight. Geez, that’s a ton of pressure on the spine! For squats, I rarely go past 225lbs, and I just do them slow if I need more tension. I value my ability to walk too much! lol
LOL dude…go watch The Stongest Men in History and watch what those guys throw around.
Also Ed Coan is the grandmaster… 950 x 2
That’s crazy right there!
Dude had 2 hip replacements and still didn’t call it quits…There’s passion, and then there’s just plain ass crazy! lol
Yeah I lived in the 4-6 rep range a long time going to failure every set. I have since moved to 10-15 rep ranges but probably still push those farther then I should. Every now and then though the ego gets going and I’ll push those heavy weights like I did in February. The multiple shoulder impingement’s that I have had and now tennis elbow should keep me away but I get feeling better and that fucking ego wins.
I’ve been told about that documentary with Ronnie, I need to go watch it.
Some would argue that the replacement parts are stronger than the originals. Maybe not when he had it done though. And hell its better than than just giving up and dying right?
My lifts are all over the map but steer clear of most singles though there is a 2 rep deadlift day. My rep ranges are anywhere from 4 to 50 and most somewhere in the middle. And I still train to failure on lifts every couple of weeks.
I typically switch up from 8-12 range to a 15-20 range. I try to push every set to failure no matter what range I’m in. If the weight is too light, I’ll just slow the reps way down. Time under tension just seems to do very well for me.
After watching some of that Dorian Yates podcast, I’m itching to incorperate some of the forced reps after fail, and adding three more negatives with help after fail too. That really sounds like it could do some good.
I use those plus drop sets, static holds, and partial reps.
I need to utilize a spotter one of these times for forced reps and negatives. I’ve done that with single arm dumbbell preachers but never with bigger compound movements.
Drop sets are probably my favorite go to, especially with arms and shoulders.
I hate them so much but god damn they are effective.
Haha the only time I hate them is with legs on bigger lifts like a leg press. Extensions aren’t too bad with them though. Except when I used them to hit 100 reps then they absolutely sucked.
Yeah a good training partner is invaluable. They don’t have to be super strong, just be able to take enough weight off to give you a little bit of an assist. It can be as little as 5-10lbs worth of assist, but it makes all the difference.
If you use a power rack, you can set the safety and then if you ever get to the point where your spotter can’t help you enough, just let the bar fall.
I use this all the time at home, and my wife is the one spotting me.
Yeah legs for sure. Bulgarian split squat drop sets make me want to cry.
Nope screw that, I hate Bulgarian split squats already. No way in hell I would add more torture with drop sets haha
New lab results in. I’m thinking that I should probably get a full thyroid panel and possibly start some thyroid treatment, but we will see what Dr Saya has to say on Monday. I would also like to hear his thoughts on the newer philosophies that have been taking center stage as of late.
Also to note…my SHBG is super low!
Consult is 6:00am Monday morning!
The numbers in pen to the right are what they were on the last blood work back in April.
