dude it said best gangster rap.
Immortal technique , political and lyrical but not a gangster rapper per say, he is though as many dicks would say “gangsta”. imo
Same with jedi mind tricks , backpacker lyricists.
Hands down the best id say with street cred, and lyrical ability would be brad jordan aka scarface n ice cube.
That is of course if you are talking about slightly commercial gangster rappers most cats have heard of.
From the oldschool to the newschool, Kool G Rap was always awesome.
Kool G Rap & DJ Polo - Poison :
- - YouTube
- This is what he could do in his younger days.
Kool G Rap ft. 5 Fam Click - I die 4 U
- - YouTube
- This is a great tune from him and the click he was with around that time. The female MC on this is actually his wife.
Kool G Rap-Breaker Breaker
- - YouTube
- From the same album as the previous link. With that song, he tried to get back to his oldschool fast-flow style while still spitting his newschool gangsta lyrics.
Kool G Rap Featuring Agallah - Right Now :
- - YouTube
- His verse is from 1:40 and up.
KOOL G RAP / DJ PREMIER - ON THE RISE AGAIN
- - YouTube
- Kool G Rap is back on this one, awesome laid back style. This has been recently released on youtube.
It would be really nice if people could add some color commentaries to their links, or else most people will pass up on that thread.
im not postin details, if you dont want to listen thats your loss
couldnt find this on youtube
if its not violence or dugs, id have nothin to spit
id be lying if i talked some spiritual shit
Look guys, mobb deep, biggie, wutang (more backpack jams but has gangsta vibe). etc etc
As far as Mobb Deep goes, they truly have come full circle. Their first album ate dicks, the second one “Infamous” is their best and a true hip hop classic, and they just got continually lamer until ultimately sealing their shitty fate with their signing to Gay-UNIT records.
NWA, pioneered the whole west coast set banger sound, but to be honest, for me they get old fast. Eazy E is entertaining, but I just can’t compare those guys to east coast gangsta rappers, they aren’t lyrically on the same level. Although majority of the east coast rappers released their “classic” albums 2-3 years after straight outta compton.
Gangsta rap was popularized early by west coast rappers, therefore a lot of people just associate all west coast rap with gangsta rap. However, you have to analyze the term gangsta as it applies in the hiphop world. It doesn’t just apply to conventional set gangsters popularized by west coast pioneers. It can refer to anyone who lives in an urban environment, makes money usually through illegal activity, and is quick to beat the shit out of someone and/or shoot/kill lol. In that respect, you have to consider biggie as gangsta rap, same goes for mobb deep, raekown, ghostface. Here’s a good list of rappers to check out if you are lookin for hardcore GOOD (I factor in flow, lyrical ability, metaphors, mulirhymes etc).
Biggie - Ready to Die is as gangsta as it gets. Also Life After Death is great.
Tupac - personally, I own all of his albums, however HARDLY listen to any of them. Not going to get into a debate on his abilities. Not my taste but definitely worth a mention. Keep in mind that a lot of his raps are much more than traditional gangsta rap.
Wutang - My favorite being their first…enter the 36 chambers.
Mobb Deep - Infamous
Nas - Illmatic…not totally violent/hardcore, but gangster inspired with tracks like “The World is Yours”, “New York State of Mind” etc. Also Nas first and BEST album hands down.
Jay-z - Not liked by all, not what you would consider conventional shoot em up, I kill people for fun gangsta rap. However, Definitely gives that I’m a drug dealing gangsta type vibe if you get what I’m saying. I make money etc. The only album I truly LOVE is his first and best Reasonable Doubt…many will argue that Blueprint is better…maybe but not to me.
Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…second best to come out of wutang as far as lyrics go. Best story teller though I feel.
Ghostface - A good new gangsta/drug album is Fishscale. One of the only somewhat recent albums I REALLY like.
Big L - Lifestyles of The Poor And Dangerous. This album is amazing on so many levels. Lyrically, not many can touch Big L…he is the metaphor KING…very violent, very gangsta, very witty, and very funny. Doesn’t get much harder than this album.
Bone Thugs - I believe they are from Ohio, but they definitely give off that west coast set banger vibe in their music.
Big Noyd - he’s featured on Mobb Deeps album Infamous. I like his verse…I have trouble finding his music. If you can great, pm me.
Fat Joe - I like his older shit when he probably had a ghostwriter…a good example is the song Shit is Real off of jealous ones envy from '95. He was good friends with Big L as they were both part of the D.I.T.C. click in the 90’s.
Big Pun - Big influence on Fat Joe…great.
I could go on and on, however this list is pretty informative and will give you a lot of material to listen to for a long time. I rotate the majority of these emcees day to day. Again, some of them aren’t gangsta rap in the sense it was in the early 90s by west coast rappers, however they still are gangsta. Majority of this stuff is about selling drugs, shooting people etc…Nothing I’d want to live by. It’s entertaining to me in the same way Scarface is or Goodfellas or any other gangsta/violent film. Enjoy

Mobb Deep-The Infamous is so gangster it makes my head hurt
Ready to die and Illmatic are two of the five best rap albums of all time, and two of the best in any genre when looking at music as a whole.
I love Big L. He and Canibus are my two favorite freestlye lyricists.
I like Bone Thugs, but a more gangster/similar style can be found with Do or Die-
- YouTube
Big Pun was an amazing lyricist, but he was hard to take seriously as gangster. Came across as more of an entertaining storyteller.
Reasonable doubt is definitely Jay-Z’s best shit, but I also really liked Hard knock life.
Ghostface is alright, but he says shit that makes no sense alot of the time.
Just tossing stuff out there that hasn’t been mentioned…mostly older Southern rap.
B.G. - Kill or Be Killed:
Lil KeKe - I’m a G feat.Scarface:
UGK - Diamonds & Wood:
Master P - Time For A 187:
Z-Ro - From The South:
Young Jeezy feat.CTE - Lil Buddy:
Ludacris - 1st and 10:
Pastor Troy - For Survival:
TRU(early West Coast era Master P) - Last Dance:
Three 6 Mafia - Hit a MuthaFucka(this is for Live781):
NWA, Public Enemy, Ice T, back when it was raw, they didn’t know they were gonna get rich off of it, it was just brothers straight spewing their pain.
When it got into money making mode, the early TuPac and Dre Snoop stuff was nice.
I can’t say I am a fan of anything recent, but I can say that my squat day playlist has some Fuck the world, ganngstas paradice and nuthin but a g thing right up next to some Pantera, Zombie and Suicidal Tendencies.
And to be honest, I liked 8 mile and Hustle and Flow.
Any brother with a struggle is ok with me.
Shit I’m 44 and white, and I relate to hustle and flow like he is my brother next door.
