Best all around gun dog, hands down. Beautiful as well.

Remember to get your dog neutered to prevent unwanted puppies.

I have a malamute that would work well. He is very trainable but can be stubborn. He’s smart enough to know what you want him to do, sometimes he just decides not to obey.

And as a general aside, Malamutes and Huskies are not wolfish. They are not part wolf or closer to a wolf than other dogs. Hybrids are a another matter. [/quote]

Depends what you mean by wolfish, and what you compare them to. In my experience they usually have a good killer instinct, and a harder mouth than a retriever for example. Not that that’s a bad thing - makes them a heck of a lot better at killing ground hogs.

Great dog for a running partner though, and a heck of a lot more eager to please than my hounds. My husky is never happier than when we go sprinting down the side road. Only down side is his eyes are so sharp he sees things I don’t. Have to take the odd detour down through the bush when he sees a deer, and takes off after it. Thankfully he’s also quicker to give up on his prey than the hounds.

Best dog I ever had to run with was a Catahoula. Had a Chow/Irish Setter mix that was really good too. And to the poster thinking that pure breeds are better than mutts, from personal experience I have found this to be untrue almost 100% of the time. Of the dogs that I, my neighbors, or my family have owned mutts will outlive pure breeds almost every time and have far fewer health issues as well. Mutts just seem to be hardier animals.

You could always go with one like this little bastard. I am sure he is good for something and he actually can keep up with a brisk 3 mile walk, plus he wears a Christmas sweater like a boss.

A baby.

Too soon?

Agreed.

Mongrels are far better than pure breeds, if you want a long life dog.

Way less health issues/

Agree that hybrid vigor is a thing, but on the other hand pure bred dogs will give you a known commodity (which is important when it comes to personality and temperment - even bigger deal if kids will be around), and unless you pick a breed with known health issues thats not that big an issue.

I’m not sure why the German short haired pointer should win gun dog “hands down”. Weimaraners and Vizslas are first class pointers.

Well, I clearly read that wrong.
