Beretta 9mm

OK a couple things come to mind after reading your post. The jamming issue was due to “limp-wristing” (good job to everyone who recognized that). The 92F does have a decocking lever mounted on the slide just forward the hammer and aft the chamber.

This will allow you to lower the hammer on a chambered round safely putting the weapon in Double Action (DA) mode. It is a combo decock/safety lever. However there are double action only models available but after reading your post I don’t think you were using one. On becoming a cop, that’s great law enforcement is a rewarding career.

I don’t know what type of organization you are joining (large vs. small) but I am assuming that you are going to put yourself through the academy (only large metropolitan agencies sponsor cadets through their own academies). If your department gives you the option of choosing your sidearm, do yourself a favor, ditch the Berretta.

I would highly recommend the Sig 226 chambered in either .357 sig or .40 caliber. Sigs have decocking levers but no safeties (safeties do not belong on a sidearm, you will discover this as soon as you have to test for speed drills, draw your weapon and have to fumble with the little levers just to fire a round!).

Now Sigs are pricey so if you don’t to spend the extra bucks (and I recommend you do, your weapon is your life!) go with the Glock in the same chambering. The 9mm is medium strength round at best. If it turns out that you have to have a Beretta find out if you can at least get the 96 chambered in .40.

Either way when you buy/are issued your weapon; learn it like a brother and keep it clean and well oiled, so that it does what it is supposed to do when it is supposed to do it! If you have any questions feel free to PM me!

P.S. if you want to impress you firearms instructor when he asks what the most important thing to shooting right is, tell him there are 3 things you must concentrate on: FRONT SITE, FRONT SITE & THE FRONT SITE!

And by the way fellows, it?s a magazine not a clip!

i am not sure what you mean by putting myself through the academy.

i will be a county cop here in MD in a county that has some record highs as far as homicides…any guesses? this county was actually mentioned recently on a TV show, possibly “the unit” i dont recall, but it was mentioned in regards to the high number of homicides…

but as far as not knowing what you mean about putting myself through the academy, i know they have their own academy, and you start getting paid full salary upon entering…if thats what you mean?

thanks

ps- i have an internship with the homicide division this summer, should be interesting!

It used to be that if you wanted to be a cop you went to the police dept. and said as much. Then if they wanted you to be a cop for them they’d sponsor you through the police academy. Now most departments don’t do that. They figure if you want to be a cop you’ll pay your own way (saving them money) and then come to them looking for a position. This is generally how it works, there are exceptions, and many smaller departments want applicants to have a 4 year CJ degree. County Sheriffs don’t usually have the same requirements as their function can be technically different from that of a ‘Police Officer’ (the differences are subtle and vary from jurisdiction). As far as working in MD you’re probably close to DC and yes that is a very high crime area. Get a good vest, I recommend Extreme Armor.

I agree with these guys.

I have a Taurus PT-92. It is a cool gun and can be cocked and locked.

Can the Beretta?
I have the same gun. It’s a better and cheaper alternative to the Beretta.

I work for the government and I have to carry a Beretta so I thought it was a good idea to have a similar weapon to be proficient with.

Both guns suck…just get a Glock.

 1. Buy this: http://www.taurususa.com/products/product-details.cfm?model=92B&category=Pistol

 2. Buy an assload of 9mm ammo and ear muffs. Sportsman’s Guide has a LOT of bulk ammo specials.

 3. Spend a lot of time at a shooting range.

If you do that, you will more or less have Baretta 9mm made by a different manufacturer. You will be completely familiar and comfortable with it when you get your issue pistol.

I’ve owned a Taurus PT92 before and it was a great pistol. It would not jam on even the cheapest ammo. I’d still have it if it had not been stolen.

If the pistols you were testing jammed while ejecting the brass, it was from using really cheap ammo.

Glocks are fantastic firearms but I HATE the long trigger pull. I could not hit shit with my model 19.
Wow, that is surprising. Glocks have very short DA trigger pulls. The length of trigger travel for discharge is 0.5 ". More like a single action trigger pull than a double action. It is much shorter than the DA pull on other popular pistols (Sig, Beretta, HK, etc).

Are you gonna be a Cop or a Soldier?

to be blunt, i have a couple blemmishes on my record, and for that reason i am using resources available to me to start as a cop. i would love to work for a federal agency, or DOD, but i have to be a cop first, to even get me in the door with those places.[/quote[

To go Federal you need a 4 year degree. To go DOD you just need a heart beat. It’s mostly OJT…others might send you to FLETC in Brunswick, GA. DoD is the easiest way to start.
