Time to read Human Action.

Just for you…

Appreciate that, lift. I need a better foundation from which to defend and explain free-market Capitalism (Econ 101 doesn’t cut it), and in the past had seen Human Action suggested. Unfortunately, I just never got around to getting a copy. However, with all this interventionism lately, it’s time.
You should read “Economics for Real People” first. This will give a good foundation for Human Action; and it is 320 pages of easy reading as apposed to 900 pages of philosophical language.

Hmm. I’ll consider it. However, I like to think I’m a quick study, and might try jumping headfirst into Human action. The page count doesn’t scare me off, and I think I might welcome more of the underlying philosophy.

That is, as long as Human Action goes on to really cover the meaty stuff. Wages, prices, monetary policy, interest, production, capital and consumer goods, interventionism into the market, etc. But, if I start feeling overwhelmed I’ll take up the suggestion. Thanks for the links.

Good post. If the automakers owe us a blow job, the unions owe us a sack licking.

I’m sort of feeling left out.

I drive too.

Hey don’t feel left out— we’re ALL getting screwed!

It does but it takes about 100 pages for him to explain the methodology which is a necessary part of the Austrian School.

The austrians can be a challenge. Rothbard is a bit more contemporary but conveys the same philosophy. He has an Economics 101 that’s pretty good. Other really good ones:

What it Means to be a Libertarian - Charles Murray
Libertarianism - A Primer - David Boaz
In our Hands - Charles Murray
Economics in one Lesson - Henry Haslett
The Politically Incorrect Guide to Capitalism - Robert Murphy
Free to Chose - Milton Friedman

These are all really easy reads. I would read these before Adam Smith, Hayak, or Von Mises.

Yeah, those are good - Murray is particularly good. I used to be an intern under Boaz - very interesting man, and a superb writer. Actually, as a good general introduction to the Austrian mindset, I like Road To Serfdom. It’s always worth reading IMO.

Call me crazy, but maybe Ford and GM should stop building pieces of shit?

I own a Honda because I felt it was the best value for the quality I was getting.

Maybe they wouldn’t be in so much trouble if they produced better value, making less people feel like I did.

EDIT: It’s a political move to save all those blue collar jobs.
Yup, I agree. If they made better cars more people would buy them. Even the new MRAP’s the Army is buying suck. I forgot the price but I know they cost more than $100K.

they seem to be doing pretty good internationally. this is just not a friendly country for manufacturing. Toyota is even starting to feel the squeeze here. The others will shortly. Best to go to mexico or canada.
