Depends on what I’m doing. Cutting, my amount will actually go up (4 to 5+ pounds) while I get leaner and leaner meats. Right now I’m training for a strongman comp and just decided to switch from 175 to lightweight novice (under 231), so I’m upping my fat and letting myself “grow” a bit (my weight hasn’t really changed much yet). I’m doing about 3.5 pounds of roughly 80/20 mostly pan fried patties, some fruit around training, lots of bone broth, plus a little fish and/or eggs most days. I don’t exactly have a set in stone plan and go largely by hunger. For my current purposes, if I’m hungry I’ll eat.
Yes. I have a big chest freezer I keep stocked. I will order 100+ pounds of beef at a time to get some discounts. Or to store 20 pound briskets.
I had one for a good while, but it was in the house I was renting.
It seemed like the cost savings on bigger orders was significant, like paying in the $1-$2/lb. range, but that was also 13 years ago, regional differences, etc.
“I have a chest freezer” also seemed like the magic words for free venison. Like You say that and people go “Oh yeah? Cuz I got 4 deer this year and it’s taking up all of the space in mine. You want a few lbs?”. To which the answer is always “Yes!”.
Between that and the herd culling program, for at least 2 years my only red meat was venison, with an odd burger or steak thrown in every now and then.
I remember as a kid my dad would come home with enormous amounts of meat then dutifully cut it up to freeze it.
I’d like to hunt my meat and store it all but I have enough trouble segmenting a rabbit lol
I just bring my deer/moose to a butcher. Saves SO much hassle.
