If I remember correctly, the Beatles originally had hair like Elvis and wore leather jackets and jeans, but their gay manager (Brian Epstein) made them change into the mop-topped, suited clown image they ended up being famous for.

My youngest is 15 year old girl, I get to hear all the time how she is in love with Bieber and going to marry him. I can see why Epstein did it and have to admit it worked. 15 year old girls are an emotional mess.
I think what made the Beatles special is camaraderie. John and Paul, and to some degree, George were all vying for the lead spot in the band. Unlike most rock bands, there was no defined front man. They brought out the best in each other through competition.
In terms of lyrics, ideas and implementing orchestra, they were far ahead of their time. Not overrated in my book!
