Anyone Try Any Unusual Meats?

You got me beat with dog, camel, bear, and javalina.

bear I didnt like, I know it depends on what the bear eats, like any omnivore but this was from a BC bear hunt and the bear was fat off salmon, I cant explain the taste it was just odd.I been told bear meat is very close in texture and taste as humans
and I never eat humans unless its wanted

the dog was in a stew,my adopted family has some family members that are part souix and they like alot of other cultures around the world raise meat dogs.
they are special dogs that eat a special diet and they are raised for slaughter ,family pets are safe. but the stew itself is seasoned well and pretty tasty

Javalina is like any other type of pig, but due to their diet it is a bit more greasy and a bit more gamy but it is good eats to get a wild boar
but taste comparison think of a pig and a boar is like a chicken is to a duck just not so dramatic a difference if that makes sense.

camel tastes alot like horse.

snake is bland
turtle is as well, any type of reptile is kind of bland on its own but they adsorb flavors well, kind of like tofu.

what else have I tried that may be “weird”
I have never had cat but I have had felines,I had tiger meat and bobcat and mountain lion.
never had kangaroo may have to have my friend kathy that lives down there send me a few steaks.
had squirrel and prairie dogs
New Brunswick stew is one of my favorites
if you think about it,everything in nature is meant to be used for one reason or another and almost every animal can be eaten. we just have hang ups on whats considered food.

I tried horse meat once. Got sick for a week. Food poisoned. Not going to try horse meat again anytime soon. (I know it is irrational.)

but understandable.
it was probaly the way it was handled and you would have gotten sick even if it was beef.

but when a person tries something different and it makes them sick its perfectly normal to not want to try it again even if you know its not cause it was the food itself.

thats the reason why I wont eat lobster.
Lobster is wonderful and tasty but it made me sick once and it kind of killed my taste for it.
I know its the restaurants fault not the lobster but still its weird.

Kangaroo, yabbies (god i love yabbies), crocodile, emu and rabbit are all edible and ok tasting. It’s just got to be done right. Cooked right, served with the right foods and munched in a manner that offends the “You can’t eat skippy!” crowd.

Damn dude, do you live in either a zoo or a Galapagos Island? HAHA

-Raw Horse…dipped in teriyaki sauce, really good!

-Bear: Extremely gamey. Would not eat again

-Whale: Tastes like an unmarinated flank steak. Really bloody. Not so good.

-Dolphin: Ate this one without knowing what it was. Sorry Flipper. The meat was OK, but the fat was really firm, almost what I’d imagine the consistency of ballistics gelatin to be.

-Rat: Served in a stir-fry. Stallone was right to enjoy his rat burger in Demolition man…very tasty.

-Bat: Very good but a pain in the ass to eat…too many bones.

Oh yeah i forgot about cat. and guinea pig. Cat was fine and accidental and was semi-chickeny. I harbor only a minor love of cats and would eat another. IT was in a curry. Guinea pig was greasy and stringy.

Jungle iguana was really good to. In super spicy green curry. Same with the bamboo worms in the same curry the next day. Or candies bamboo worms are cool too. And I thought our guide was crazy for running around the jungle to such great lengths just to find these bamboo worms. He must have chopped every decent sized bamboo stalk on the 4 hour hike. but once he found them and we ate them, they were pretty good.

Dragon meat is quite nice

Are you talking about komodo dragon meat? Cause that shit is anabolic as hell, or so I hear.

Lol I was joking, what do you mean its anabolic as hell? Pardon my lack of knowledge.

Actually I was joking too. I guess, sometimes I don’t do a very good job of conveying humor via text. If you take a look, the thread I linked was also something of a joke.

All this talk of unusual meats has piqued my interest. Since my backyard is currently infested with prairie dogs, I may have to shoot one and see what it tastes like.

I would love to try different meats. You guys are lucky. One of my co-workers gets iguana every now & then. It’s wild iguana not from a local petco, that he buys from his neighbor who has family in Trinidad. He told me he pays $200 for 1 iguana. That’s crazy.

Here is my chump list of unusual meats:

alligator- texture was like chicken & it tasted like fish. Didn’t like it
Emu & ostrich- Awesome, like a spicy beef. Sucks that it’s expensive.
Elk- Don’t really remember what it tasted like but I had 2 plates worth
Quail- taste like young chicken.
venison- Yummy

lol, no My family is a full of hardcore survivalists
we come from the thought that there will be another civil war and the next world war will on us soil, basically in my lifetime or my childrens lifetime in the united states we may infact see what the Europeans saw in the early 20th century and we are all taught early to be strong enough and smart enough to go thrive in any situation, no mater where it may be.

we would go on week long hunting/camping trips.
go back in someplace remote with our own water some weapons and nothing else.

kind of cultish and crazy, but atleast I can grow my own food and eat whatever critter comes along without worrying about silly things.
