He was awesome enough to get mentioned in ‘Smoke on the Water’ :D.
What are some good albums to get started on some Zappa?[/quote]
His most mainstream are probably Apostrophe, Over-night sensation, Sheik Yerbouti or his greatest hits, Strictly commercial.
Look here brother,
Who you jivin’ with that Cosmik Debris?
Oddly enough i was just about to start a similar thread.
No matter how much i listen to his work i never seem to get bored with it.
For someone interested i would start with Hot Rats or Freak Out as there are many great songs in those albums, not to say that there were not in his other albums.
But those are good albums to get yourself started,at least it worked for me…
One of my favorite Zappa quotes that I quote often:
“You can be scared if it gets too real… But you gotta dig it while it’s happening!”
Name that tune ![]()
It just might be a one-shot deal

One Shot Deal
Oh ya-- from “Waka/Jawaka”… Love it.
I’m big on his serious compositions. If anyone is interested in modern classical music, ‘Burnt Weeney Sandwhich’ is a gem.
Muffin Man has some pretty sweet guitar solo.

Not sure what a good ‘starter’ would be for him, but I started on a friend’s copy of Burnt Weeny Sandwich and then bought Hot Rats. They got me hooked and are still two of my favorite albums by him.

Wish I would have seen this post earlier. Burnt Weeny Sandwhich was my first Zappa album too. I remember sitting there with headphones on and after listening through the whole album I was like ‘what the hell did I just listen to’. Not in a bad way, but because I’d never heard anything quite like it. I put the album away for a few weeks. Then one day looking at my cd catalog I saw it and put it in, and since then I’ve been in love with his serious music.
