I use a refurbed MacBook I bought from the Apple Store for like $1000. Pentium chipset, so I have Bootcamp, and XP on it. Best money I ever spent.

I’m replacing the office computers, and I am seriously considering going mac there as well.

Thanks, RJ. I might have to give the refurbs a look, then. God, I wish I could use a Mac at my current job. They are so much more efficient it is unbelievable. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wished I could use Spotlight to find an obscure file while at work.

I looked up the Mac Book Air and it is getting pretty negative reviews.

I was creaming my pants to get the Air when it first came out, but once you start looking at it, it’s not really worth the 1700 bucks. No optical drive, shitty battery life, and the keyboard issues.

But if the price comes down - I’m probably going to buy one anyway just because of the cool factor.

Agreed as far as the Air goes. No optical and bad battery is bad enough, but I can’t use anything that fragile.

I’m a guy who grew up working on trucks and tractors, so anything with parts small enough to make me turn on a light and use my fingertips pisses me off. I’ve dropped my MacBook fullbore on the floor several times and it works just fine. I also haul it around in a backpack with a couple enormous textbooks on my bike.

I have noticed a couple very small cracks on the case, and I don’t think the fit is very good where the battery connects, but I regard these as cosmetic issues, and totally understandable for how much abuse I’ve given it.

The only complaint I have that might be related to it being a refurb is that the “A” key sticks, which leads me to make a lot of typos, but I’ve had it four months and it hasn’t really impeded my work output.

Oh, and if you get a mac, go to MacMall to buy your accessories and buy some more ram. I’ve got a 2.2GHz Intel with 4Gb ram and it’s plenty fast for everything I do, which admittedly is mostly watching tv and porn and typing.

If you’re into something really cheap, a lot of people like the ASUS Eee. It’s only around $300.

For some reason I read the title as “Any good online lapdance deals”.

I was going to say that, so make that 2 people for the Eee PC.

Also: Panasonic Toughbook, while hard to find, are very durable. Like, very very durable. There is different varieties, some are “business rugged” and some are Mil-Spec, I think.

BTW, check out getting home insurance to cover laptop damage. It should be cheaper than getting the extended warranty.

Dell has some fantastic deals every once in a while, if you can wait for it. I got my laptop for 35% off, which was huge considering the original price was $2200.

EDIT:

It looks like the uncustomized inspirons are going for $1000 or lower right now. They’re all really solid, too; you can’t go wrong with a 2ghz dual core processor and 320 gb hard drive.
Cool site.

Looks like I’m gettin’ a Dell.

You Dell guys had better start brushing up on your Indian.

^^ That’s the Dell Home Computer site and you’ll find even better deals at Dell Small Business site. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Listen up guys: it is a flatout MISTAKE to purchase any laptop (or desktop) without first scanning the forums and frontpage deals over at:

This is where you find $400 Core 2 Duo Dell Laptops, $600 Thinkpads, coupon codes for $500 off HP media laptops, and plenty of other amazing deals on Lenovos and Macs, both refurbs and brand new. This is also where you find out when the major retailers (Best Buy, Staples, Office Depot etc) are clearing out their inventories and what locations still have clearance items in stock.

Just keep in mind that the very best deals will expire within hours, and not days. Prob because too many people know about that site already. Oops.

Shit, I just got a Compaq…and trust me…tech support needs a plane ticket and a “do you speak English?” plan.

These are used products?

I was referring to brand new laptops and desktops, though you will see used/refurbished machines occasionally listed as well.

Of course the examples I included were some of the very best deals I’ve seen over the last year or so but if you are able to get in on one (and it sometimes comes down to simply being online at the right time), the satisfaction does last for awhile.
