(Another) Tattoo Advice Thread

I wouldn’t worry about the mexican mafia getting at you for that tattoo if you’re clearly northern european.

My family crest is cool, but the motto is “Semper fidelis.” Needless to say I can’t get that tattooed on me as much as I’d like to because I don’t want every dick asking me if I was a marine.
Were you a marine?

I’d be more wary of the Irish. To me, it looks more like this, the Red Hand of Ulster.
A lot of Irish people are in Ulster.

I noticed the bottom hand is reversed on his design…You cool with that?

The artists version looks good, and if he’s got skills (which I’m sure he does) it’ll come out bad ass.

The only thing I’d be curious/cautious of is the size of it, and for 1 reason: See the spot where the upper left hand’s fingers touch the bottom of the helmet thing? With small lines like that, they’ll likely thicken and blend together over time. Maybe either make the hand print bigger, or modify it so they’re not touching. The hands could even both be pointing outward. Or instead of the full finger outline, make the hand colored in, and the negative lines will outline the fingers.

Like this, bit with the colors reversed.

Good advice, thanks. I’ll bring this up when I go into the shop next.

What about the size of it would you be cautious about? The artist told me he was imagining it about the size of a regular sheet of paper; 8.5"x11". I think that size would be good, or maybe just a smidge smaller.

I like the style of the hand in that link, but I feel like if I use it in my crest it won’t go with the ancient/regal feel.

I asked the artist to incorporate a left hand in there since I’m left-handed. Also, it kinda makes it feel more symmetrical to have both left and right hands.

one hand washes (patty cakes?) the other.

this is what the artist came back with after i told him to change some stuff up. thoughts?

shit. double post.
Edit: the image is cut off on the left, the actual piece is complete. He sent me an email with the new sketch and I asked for some more changes. I told him to change the helmet and to redo the circle inside the star in the middle b/c it seems asymmetric. I’m going to go in a couple days from now and check out what he’s got for me.
You do realize the hands have changed from your orginal? Your orginal had two left hands and the artist has a left and right hand.

Different perspective much? I thought it was two right hands in the original, palms facing. not two left hands palms turned away. I’m not certain about the hands. What would you do with them?

Latest iteration of the sketch.
Changed the helmet, the other one looked a bit feminine.
Took the circle out of the star in the middle, I felt it looked asymmetrical.

for people worrying/not caring that alot of different family crests look similar, yes a few are just made up by unscrupeulous dicks preying on people (i.e americans) who understandably wish to reconnect with their early american or european ancestors.
BUT bear in mind heraldic devices have been around for centuries, first as a form of identification on battle fields and the livery (uniforms) of squires/servants of noble families etc. then any merchant/middle class bloke with a big ego and a deep pocket could commission a crest for his family. Then marrige between familes meant that the crests for their kids were combined, often 3rd or forth siblings had extra devices put on their own heraldry to signify their postion in society etc.
What im saying is heraldry is like trying to find a direct descendant of gengis khan tody

The hands just look off to me whichever way they are facing. I don’t know if a gauntlet is a possibility or just a more defined habd. Everything else looks good. Next question is color issues.

Black and Pink.

Dude … Did you ever get the tat?

Funny thing … Looking at family crests online, search linked me to the T Nation forum - wasn’t expecting that!

Just curious, as we share the same last name

I know … Ashamed I didn’t recognize the back double bi from my Brother From Another Mother

It was kind of surreal man … I was thinking the same thing (family crest as tattoo) and I get a link to T Nation with a guy with the same name posting about it!

Smells like destiny

Curious to see his, but not sure if he posts anymore

No matter what you do, PLEASE heed my advice:

FIND A GREAT TATTOO ARTIST.

You will have this for the rest of your life.
Get someone who can shade, blend colors, do proper line work.
Get a real pro.
Pay way more than you want to if you have to but get a damn good tattoo FFS.
There are way too many poorly done tattoos in the world.

Don’t be afraid to do a little commute to meet up with your artist.

That’s pretty wild that you found someone on T Nat with the same last name looking for a crest tattoo.
