Not all immigrants are equal, and I don’t mean the legal vs illegal argument. Today’s immigrants are generally not as willing to become a part of America, because there is a segment of America that really isn’t American. There is a line drawn in the sand, due to proximity with those south of the border, because they so easily have access to their home country. People of Europe, Africa, and Asia can’t just drive back home, so they are almost forced to become American, more than Latinos. You see SO many organizations that contribute to the cultural divide with the Latino groups. Do you see an equal number of organizations for Greeks, Italians, Irish, Russian, African

To a degree, I agree. Once you were here from Europe, it was going to be hell going back. It certainly wasn’t a two hour car ride away.
But I also think that when you say they’re not willing to become part of America- that’s been said about every immigrant group that’s ever come over. They said it, again, about the Italians, certainly the Chinese, etc.
Again- this has been said about every immigrant group. In the 1840s, 50s, 60s, it was the Irish that made up the majority of the gangs, ala Asbury’s “Gangs of New York” or the book by TJ English named “Paddy Whacked.” The same things were said- they have too many kids, there’s no discipline, they drink too much, the slums are full of them, etc. etc. etc.
Newspaper articles compared teh Irish to a plague of locusts, the signs “No dogs or Irish allowed” were everywhere… I mean, honestly, we’ve seen ALL of this before. And what did the Irish do? They took the jobs that no one else wanted (which, then, was firefighters and cops) and worked their way up.
The Mexicans will do the same, especially their children who are citizens, who in public schools, and who want their children to do well. I think you’re being excessively harsh on Mexicans, because they ALREADY have a better reputation than the Irish did- I don’t know if it’s the same in Cali, but if someone here says you “work like a Mexican,” it’s a compliment.
And I see them all over some of the smaller towns, with their children walking, outside in the morning waiting for work… they’re just people, no better and no worse, and as I said, the same thing has been said about every immigrant group that’s come over here.
And the Asians, I’ll bet, are a little bit better off when they come here, they’re a little more organized, and I’ll bet there’s fewer of them. It’s not the same as the mass immigration that’s happening with Mexico at the moment, so while I understand what you’re saying, I think you’re kind of comparing apples and oranges.
