The Alberta health minister is touring our dear province polling the people regarding an idea that I believe has great merit. She wants people who don’t take care of their health to pay higher health care premiums. For example…smokers would be charged extra…non-exercisers would be charged more…people with gym memberships etc would be given tax credits and similar benefits.
I think this is a phenomenal idea. But I also believe it will never happen. Too difficult to quantify the varying degrees of unhealthy behaviour…and the fat people and smokers would cry unfair and their tears would drown the healthy in a sea of disgust.
Are there any other states/provinces with similar ideas/programs?
In the US do insurance companies offer lower rates for people who can demonstrate a healthy/active lifestyle?
