In truth he was neither the best nor the worst. He was likeable (unless you were on his bad side), mildly charismatic, not exceptionally intelligent. He certainly doesn’t deserve hagiography.

Funnily enough, many intelligent conservative commentators admit that, w53ere he to run for president in the current rabid political climate, he would be seen by many Republicans and conservatives as too far left.

Have you ever been to an old steel town ?
Have you?

I live in one.
I grew up in Youngstown Ohio, which one do you live in , I am 53 , saw the mills in their hay day.
Thank God you got the hell out of there man, just in the last 2 years or so we got a mayor who’s FINALLY come to the conclusion…hey, the mills ain’t coming back, let’s shrink our city cause THERE AIN’T NO PEOPLE STAYING HERE!

You been back lately, Federal Street’s lookin rebuilt except for 2 buildings thanks to Taft and Trafficant (ironically) and theres a convo. center which continues to bleed money. The west side’s turned to shit, Chaney one of 2 high school left in the city, is now a total wreck. The other sides of town are infested with gangs and vacant homes.

but getting back to the point, the worst thing I think Reagan did was pull the troops out of Lebanon after the Marine Barracks attack. That and not let soldiers have live ammunition in their guns. Under those circumstances, either we should not have been there in the first place, or after the attack we should have leveled Lebanon with an all out attack. Because we did nothing, America was percieved as being weak.

And don’t get me wrong, I’m still pissed at Carter about the limp ass response to the Iran Hostage crisis.
I was back there 3 years ago , I am due to go back this year for sure , I have a new Grandson I have not met yet  I know alot of Carter haters are standard partisan hacks , I thought his plan was brilliant , The way I understand it he was going to put the whole city asleep and go in and take the hostages. A storm ruined the logistics . Reagan worked out a deal prior to Carter leaving office , it could have been part of the plan for Iran to wait until the election to releases the prisoners . It was like the next day after the elections the prisoners were released

Pitt, I understand your frustration…but you don’t think that the Unions had just a LITTLE bit to do with the collapse of the steel industry…just a little?

Utah is a 99% non-union state (plumbing and electrical are the exceptions) and we are getting many large manufacturing facilities moving here that are fleeing union demands in the rust belt.

Don’t think you can blame Reagan for destroying the rust belt, the unions are just as much to blame.

And to call him the worst POTUS because he “took your jobs” is just not true.

Yes I believe unions had something to do with the Steel Industry not being the best it could be , But I also know what it is like to work in an Industry that was one time Union and is no longer. I am presently working in one such Industry. If your employer screws you , which is common practice , your only options are , Quit or Sue your Employer . If you choose to sue , good luck getting another job.

Like I say the Union has as much Guilt as do the Industry itself.

I am not angry at Reagan for taking my job, I am angry at Reagan to take a prosperous area of the country and turn it in to a competitor with Eastern EU. for poverty and all the trimmings that go with it.

And all this is due to Reagan selling America on the premise if you send $10 up to the top the Top will TINKLE down the people below

Supply side economics is half of the equation , other wise you will deplete the demand through the simple process of lack of funding.

the mills began closing in 1977, under Carter’s watch.

I was 1 year out of High School , I still remember , Youngstown Sheet and Tube closed for some other Reason . I will be honest I do not Remember WHY?

When Reagan took office all the mills did not close immediately , But they drug on laying off consistently . It took time but all the Mills died,

You Still have some Mills living Today Republic is Name ? I have heard Copperweld starts and stops like a clock . But the mills lost big time
