Ok so I needed to take an elective this semester so I decided to take a swimming class hah. Now I thought this was just going to be a chill class, I figured we’d play water polo and maybe swim a few laps, but oh boy was I wrong.
Apparently I signed up for an “advanced” swimming class lol, the teacher said she will be writing us workouts and for the entire 50 minutes we will be swimming laps or doing some other water workout, it’s gonna be intense. Which leads me to my question, this class is at 9 am, so I figured why not make this into a nice fasted/semi- fasted cardio session?
But I’m not quite sure what to eat before hand. There is no way I can do laps for an hour on an empty stomach sorry, so I’m curious what some of you vets would suggest. I rarely do cardio so this is something new to me. A few table spoons of peanut butter? A shake with like 30 carbs/15 protein? Suggestions welcome! thanks.
Oh and keep in mind I am still in a bulking phase, but I wouldn’t mind dropping a little body fat in the process so I would like to get as much out of this swimming class as possible. It also sucks seeing as I will be working until 5 am tonight and the class is at 9 haha.
Seriously, your best bet is to drop the class if it’s an actual “advanced” swimming class. Chances are they’ll just have you swimming laps for 45 out of 50 minutes almost. However, if you’re easily capable of that, I’d just suggest having a protein bar (high calories), so you minimize the volume of the food you eat.
Anything else and personally, I’d cramp after 20 minutes of swimming

shit I forgot about the “wait 30 minutes after you eat before getting in the pool” adage lol. Dropping it isn’t really an option though, I think I may just try that protein bar . . .
I might have to bust out the NO Xplode for this gasp lol

I used to never eat breakfast on days I had swim practice in HS. If I did I’d vomit all over the place. We were swimming about 2 miles a practice though. People underestimate how hard swimming actually is. The only thing I’ve done close to it is wrestling practice.

Yah I worked out with the wrestling team in high school once football season was over, it wasn’t fun lol. I just don’t want to go completely catabolic while I’m doing this ><
Btw random but I see you’re from TN. Are you in college? If so do you go to UTK?

I’m not saying don’t eat, just test the “waters”
No, I’ve been out a few years. Live in franklin south of Nashville not far from MTSU.
Man… I would drop it, unless you’re looking to lose weight for the next four months.
Swimming is one of the best low-impact cardiovascular exercises you can do; to punish yourself for 50 minutes 3X/wk in an advanced fashion is going to peel fat off your body, fast. Unless your goal is lose fat, I just can’t understand swimming that much.
Unless you already swim ALOT bro I have a feeling you’re in for a big suprise. You’re not exactly built like a swimmer and unless you’re genetically blessed and don’t have to work your ass of to hold the muscle you have then I would say drop that class.
Check out a yoga class or something along those lines. The chicks are always hot ass a mofo and it’s good to help with your flexibility and stress management. Should cover an elective as well and most schools offer it.
Just wondering when is the last time you tried to swim laps for over a half hour straight. BTW sorry if I missed this elsewhere and my post is retarded…

Yah I never heard of a 260 lb long distance swimmer haha, you have a point there. Fortunately I have a buddy who is about my size who just so happens to be in the same class, I just messaged him on facebook and hopefully he gives me some insight.
As to the laps part of your question . . . not since the neighborhood swim league when I was like 12 lol. My plan is to just swim slow as crap, and unfortunately I checked the other electives and the only options I have left are raquetball and golf. . . no thanks lol
This last fall I swam with a Master’s club for a few months. I swam in HS, and wanted to get fast for the alumni meet so I could whoop some ass.
I practiced 3 times a week in the early AM (1.5 hours per workout), and would normally have a PB sandwich with milk about a half hour before I got in the pool, and followed it up with a combination of milk and blackstrap molasses PWO.
I also started lifting seriously for the first time in my life this fall, and I can tell you the gains came pretty slowly.
Definitely keep your daily calories up to offset the extra energy expenditure, and consider dropping the class before the first week is up if it seems above your head.
p.s… don’t be stupid, man. get some sleep! trying this on fewer than 4 hours of sleep will not bring you any closer to your goals. if tonight is a one-time thing, what can you do? but don’t make a habit of working 'til 5 when you have to swim at 9!

I could always eat a huge sub sandwich right before swimming and not puke. There’s only one way to find out if you can do the same. I say you should eat plenty beforehand.
Bro I’m gonna tell you right now I’m about 30 lbs less then you are and maybe a little leaner but by most people’s standards a pretty muscular guy. I get a pump pretty damn easily on or off gear (don’t know if you juice don’t fuckin care).
Point it you try to swim slow fast or whatever for over a half hour and I friggin gaurantee you will have the most ridiculously pumped back to the point that you’ll probably cramp.
ALso chances are your instructor is going to look at you like you’re some sort of meathead unfunctional douchebag and isnt’ gonna be thrilled with your inability to perform bc everyone things guys with muscle have big ego’s. Just a possible scenario doggy…

5 am is how it goes when you work at a night club lol
Thanks for the advice everyone, I will probably be trying each of these approaches through out the next few weeks.
Wideguy, you are probably right lol but I still want to try it, I am looking forward to the challenge.
