Shit, I have nothing but positive things to say about my personal isotretinoin experience. I mean, I’m staring another cycle soon since I cut my last one a bit short (ran outta money and ‘relapsed’ about 5 months down the road), but at a modest 40mg/day all I needed to do was carry some Chapstick with me and hit up the Aveeno after showering, mid-day, and before bed.
My face would chap off for about a day or two every time I upped the dosage (started at 10mg and tapered upwards), and I would personally recommend starting low and working your way up to find your sweet spot.
It’s a common sense thing, though - you CAN get very good results at a lower dosage (10 - 20mg/day); you just need to stick with it longer. But, some people think that the harsher the side effects, the better the treatment (no pain, no gain!), so they suffer through the higher dosages without even considering dropping down 10, 20mg to find the point where they get clearer skin without feeling like a pile of chapped shit.
Obviously, your mileage may vary (and I’m no dermatologist or pharmacist), but I would imagine that most people with horrifying iso experiences were put on traditional high dosages during their treatment.
I was on 50mg Accutane a day… I wouldn’t recommend it. Your acne will go away, that is true, but it gave me this depressed state of mind that was totally not worth it. I’ll tell you, I’m not easily depressed. I’m an upbeat guy, never worry about shit. The Accutane changed me though and it was not fun. The dry skin, lips etc you can live with, but I personally will not use it ever again.
After stopping the acne came back btw, not as strong as before, but still it came back. So I don’t know if it’s even worth it. I would say you can improve so much with diet that you should try that first.
I agree. Accutance is simply a path of poisoning your body in an attempt to kill certain glands. Logically, this has terrible side effects, and doesn’t always solve the problem.
I guess the reason why I am such a big opponent of Accutane, and anti-biotic treatments as well, is because I believe that there are much more efficient, healthier ways to go about treating such problems.
By changing my diet, I not only cleared my acne, but also felt the health benefits as well, and didn’t have to ingest anything that could be detrimental to my health. I know that there are some people that have terrible acne, and for those I think Accutane is probably necessary, but for the majority of people I think changes in diet and exercise can make dramatic changes.
