A Memes Only Thread

It was addressed to people who are/should be retired and think 35-40 year olds are still kids.

But would you steak your reputation on it?

It originated in 2009 when boomers were 45-63. It applied to the people who were in the prime of their working years and enjoying the top of what had been a good time to be working in America. They didn’t appreciate the fact that they had in some cases pulled the corporate ladder up behind themselves after climbing it.

Today, as you suggest, boomers are 61-79 and mostly retired. But the meme is still targeted to people who are in the position boomers were in 15-20 years ago, which is genx and older millennials today.

I think it’s more about generational attitudes, not a specific numerical range. “Ok, millennial” would mean something totally different.

The generation classification always perplexed me. Theres so many things that dont make sense when you try to group people by age and make huge assumptions of their shared experience. Im considered an old millenial, born in 86. Came of age before the internet or cell phones were consequential. But the millenial moniker is given to people 10 years younger who had both of those things through childhood.
The world moves too fast and things change too quickly to name generations by 15-20 year increments anymore.

I think we’re saying mostly the same thing. “OK, Boomer” is addressing people of a certain age, even though Boomers are no longer that age.

We have a situation where there is confusion as to whether generational labels are static and always apply to people of a certain age or age with people and always apply to people born in a certain year. Supposedly, it is the latter, but “OK, boomer” as a meme seems to be doing the former.

I dont say this because it’s too ambiguous to include my specific criticisms of boomers.

For me, it’s not an age or generation thing, its an attitude thing. Boomer attitudes and behaviors are what I’m generally criticizing when im referring to boomers. So even if someone isn’t actually a boomer, they’re still catching smoke if they’re acting like one.

Works even better with Mr. Self Destruct!

I find it amazing how these themes emerge from our collective conscience of the internet in the form of memes.
