A Game of Thrones (Trailer)

That is a valid concern but Brandon Sanderson, IMO, has really done a great job with TGS and ToM. And I guess to continue to derail this Sanderson’s Mistborn series is pretty decent, too. And I would like to throw Patrick Rothfuss’ Kingkiller Chronicles out there. I’ve only read The Name of the Wind but it was nasty, highly recommended.

I can’t even explain how excited I am for Dance with Dragons to be released. Hopefully during this half decade period where he’s been writing he’s gotten a chunk of 6 and 7 finished as well and they’ll all be released one year after another.

I really liked the mistborn series. It def. took an unorthodox approach towards “magic” with the burning of metals in the human body. Patrick Rothfuss’ “The Name of the Wind” is amazing, and one of my favorite books.

Unfortunately, the rest of the series has yet to be published. “The Wise Man’s Fear”, the next book in the series, JUST came out in the past few days. I need to get my hands on a copy of it.

Once RR Martin comes out with the newest book I’ll have to re-read all the older books to review. It’s been about a year since I touched them, so I barely remember the million alliances and feuds going on in the books. lol.

REJOICE! LOL!

My friend from Random House just sent me that link. Apparently many people there are very excited he chose a date.

Thanks for this news!

Btw, I promptly read all Brian Sandersons work before starting WOT again. I must say, he is a top notch writer, and no one would be disappointed with the Mistborn trilogy, or Elantris.

Haven’t there been projected release dates before?

Best books I’ve ever read, of any genre, hands-down and I’ve read a lot of books. I’m pretty convinced that Martin is going to die of some obesity-related illness before the series is over though, especially at this rate. In which case I will be making a visit to his grave to piss on it.

I liked this book a lot too! I could not put it down when I bought it. No time to read the sequel though so I haven’t bought it yet.

Terry Brooks’ Shannara series was also really good. It will always hold a special place in my heart as my introduction to fantasy, though I haven’t re read them in a while and was about 15 when I read all of those so who knows what I’d think now.

This is a hella different genre so feel free to disregard but another series I greatly enjoyed was The Camulod Chronicles by Jack Whyte. Starts with “The Skystone” think combo Arthurian legend/Romans in Britain Historical Fiction. Tis good.

Me too. I really liked “Elfstones” and “Wishsong” was ok. Garet Jax was a total kickass character (pun intended).
Delays in publication

Despite original predictions of possible completion in late 2006, Martin has not finished the book as of March 2011[update]. Martin’s blog has featured sporadic updates on his progress, and in January 2008 he posted an update on his website affirming his vigilant commitment to finishing the book.[14] In early 2008, publisher Spectra Books (a division of Random House) announced that A Dance with Dragons would be released on September 30, 2008,[18] but Martin stated this would only be possible if he finished writing by the end of June, before a trip to Spain and Portugal,[19] and he did not meet this goal.[20]

On February 19, 2009, Martin posted on his website, “I am trying to finish the book by June. I think I can do that. If I do, A Dance with Dragons will likely be published in September or October.”[2] On June 22, 2009, the author expressed “guarded optimism” in respect to his progress on the book, while still not confirming a publication date.[21] When asked in a July 2009 interview with FREE! Magazine how the book was going, Martin stated, “It is going pretty well, actually. I am hoping to finish it by September or October; that is my goal.”[22] On October 6, 2009, Martin said that his working manuscript for A Dance With Dragons had just exceeded 1,100 pages of completed chapters, plus “considerably more in partials, fragments, and roughs.”[23] He noted that this made the upcoming novel longer than his earlier books A Game of Thrones and A Feast for Crows, and nearly as long as A Clash of Kings.[23]

On March 2, 2010, Martin remarked that he had reached 1,311 manuscript pages, making Dance the second longest book in the series at that point, behind only the 1,521-page manuscript of A Storm of Swords.[24] On July 8, 2010, Martin spoke at a conference and confirmed the current length of the book to be 1,400 manuscript pages. He expressed his disappointment that he was unable to completely finish the book by the conference, although he would not speculate how soon the book would be completed after his return home on July 11.[25] At the same conference, Martin also confirmed that he has written one Sansa, one Arya, and two Arianne chapters for the planned sixth novel, Winds of Winter, and has transferred two Cersei chapters from that book into A Dance with Dragons.[26] On August 7, 2010, Martin confirmed that he had completed 8 POVs, excluding prologue and epilogue.[27]

At the New York Comic Con on October 10, 2010, Spectra senior editor Anne Groell announced that Martin had only five chapters remaining to finish, with sections of the chapters already completed. She stated her desire to have the manuscript completed by December.[28] In a December 2010 interview with Bear Swarm, Martin stated that he almost has A Dance With Dragons completed.[29]

The delays surrounding A Dance with Dragons have polarized some of Martin’s fan base, with some questioning his commitment to finishing the series.[30]

On March 3, 2011, the release date of the novel was announced as July 12, 2011, with Martin making a statement on his website:

Yes, I know. You've all seen publication dates before: dates in 2007, 2008, 2009. None of those were ever hard dates, however. Most of them... well, call it wishful thinking, boundless optimism, cockeyed dreams, honest mistakes, whatever you like.

This date is different. This date is real.

Barring tsunamis, general strikes, world wars, or asteroid strikes, you will have the novel in your hands on July 12. I hope you like it.

(For what it's worth, the book's a monster. Think A STORM OF SWORDS.)

The dragons are coming. Prepare to dance.

And hey... thanks for waiting.

And the Dragonlance Chronicles trilogy as well as the Legends Trilogy by Hickman and Weis.

Also, the Belgariad Series by David Eddings. Rather sarcastic humor at times, but I really liked the characters and how the story was laid out. The second series, Mallereon, was almost a copy of the Belgariad, which was disappointing.
I second these books, though they’re definitely lighter reading than most other suggestions in this thread. They’re just pleasant reads that don’t require a lot of thought, they’re each centered around a small group of central characters.

If you like ^^those books, you’ll probably like the whole Drizzt Chronicles (starting with Homeland by R.A. Salvatore)- it’s one of my favorite fantasy series.
I have ~115 Dragonlance books boxed up in my closet. Decent start for those new to the fantasy genre, as they are definitely light reading… completely out of their league when stacked against ASoFaI, though.

God, fucking finally. Glad that he took his fingers off the pancakes and put them back on the typewriter.

Orcs! Orcs! Orcs!

Daenerys! Daenerys! Daenerys!

I want to hear more about Arya. I just know she’s going to be the most badass character in the series.

+1

But I still think Jon Snow is the most badass character. There’s just something about fighting the white walkers and being the one to deal with Stanis at the same time… Although, it could well be Arya when she grows up, but will she become an adult in this series?

By the way, I was thinking of the first book and I remember not remembering something. Who were those two guys that Arya overheard in the “Dragon” room? Was that ever explained?

If it was explained I missed it. I even spent a bit of time trying to think of who the characters may be but the ones available did not fit unless I assume it was Varys in one of the disguises…

Tyrion I find to be the most interesting of characters.

LOVED THIS BOOK.

I just hope the TV series can live up to the powerfully vivid worlds, characters, and relationships that the book created.

How do these compare to Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time Series? Personally I loved Robert Jordan’s masterpiece (and am sad he didn’t get to finish it, though Sanderson has done well) and am looking for something new to read.

I didn’t finish the Wheel of Time series because it dragged on for too long in places. What I like about Martin’s writing is: 1. there’s more flow and doesn’t drag as much 2. The characters are more fluid (meaning they’re not necessarily all true good/evil personality characters)

Well, I’m glad I’m not nuts or stupid, haha.

Yeah, Tyrion is a VERY interesting character. What I was surprised by was when the wolves attacked him at Winterfell. It made me think that I don’t understand the wolves very well, or maybe they knew he would go on to support his family?
