I’ve always had an issue with this. My personal opinion is that with self defence you have to go “too far”. I recently had a discussion with someone that’s spent basically his entire life going in and out of jail.
He mentioned a few things that re-enforced my belief. First, frequently when committing crimes people (he was referring to “career criminals”) are on drugs and their adrenaline is pumping so they really don’t feel much until the next day.
Secondly, if the person is a “career criminal”, they may really not want to go back to jail, so he/she will be fighting in a survival mode. Even if you subdue the person, as soon as that person has an opportunity to escape/fight back he will.
Third and most important, how do you know that this person is alone and not carrying a weapon.
Basically for me, self defence means the other person is unconscious. Fortunately I’ve never needed to use this and hopefully I never will.
