5x5 and 1x5

hi, i’ve always been a lurker but now i have a question and i hope that you’ll be able to help me out.

so, in Bill Starr’s periodized 5x5 program, it says to do, let’s say, bench press for 1 set of 5 reps, that is to say i should work my way up t that 1 set. my question is: should the weight used in this 1x5 be equal to that used in 5x5? logic behind that is that i can (presumably) lift heavier weight for a 1x5 than i can for a 5x5…so, should i aim for a heavier weight or just stick to the weight i used to lift 5x5?

i hope i didn’t complicate the question too much…

thanks for your help!

I think this should answer all your questions about 5x5

thanks for the link…i found the answer to my question in the table where some example weight was written…but i do have one more question…i’m confused about should i use more weight each consecutive training or each consecutive week? i mean, if i used 200lbs in a certain lift on monday, do i use heavier weight on friday, when that lift takes place again, or the next monday? i’m asking this because there’s a lot of talk on that site about using heavier weight every WEEK but not every training session and i don’t want to mess this up by using wrong parameters…
thanks

Take a look at the supplied Excel spreadsheet that should clear up the remainder of your questions.

got it, thanks a lot!

I switched from 5x5 to 1x5. I found i could increase the weight each workout. For me that was twice a week.
