In high school I went to this “Saturday Morning Physics Program” at Fermilab (kinda neat Leon Lederman won the Nobel Prize that summer while we were there ) and what we found out was the researchers would print out the integrals on a paper and then cut it out and then weigh that paper vs a known area of paper and figure out the integral from that. And these are grad student and phd physicists who hated integrals.

That’s a neat application of area under the integral. Might have to try that.

aN = -3000*r^(N-1)

r=.01

a1 = -3000(.01^0) = -3000

a2 = -3000(.01^1) = -30

a3 = -3000(.01^2) = -.3

a4 = -3000(.01^3) = -.003

a5 = -3000(.01^4) = -.00003

a6 = -3000(.01^5) = -.0000003

oh my goodness! it’s a geometric series.

See the pattern…? you should be able to guess what the N++ term is going to be from there.[/quote]

i know its a geometric sequence, i was just freaking out because i thought the A6 had to be -3000

now that i realize its A1, its not such big deal.

i always get confused from math terminology. thats why i could get the 3 items problem so easily, because its ust about being literal whereas this other shit ust gives me a headache.

if i had a course of just logical stuff, no formulas, id get an A.

Dude, I found this thread as the 3rd hit down on Google Blogs Search for “discrete mathematics suck” :). I am taking this class at University of Washington as part of my CS degree. It is really throwing me for a loop. I am an A- student (3.7 College GPA) and I’ll be lucky to pull a 75% in this class. It just came out of no where.

I’m resigned to viewing this and the subsequent classes that pull from its subject matter as part of the price of a degree that will get me a good job.

Me: “What the hell is this stuff? Can’t I just code?”
Math Tutor: “No, now pay attention!”

The only people who are breezing through it are those darn genius Asian kids at the front of the class!

are you serious? dude the final from this class was so fucking stupid. i dont know how i did but heres an example of the questions

  * * *   * * * *     continue the pattern

-26 1 -22 1 -18 1 ____ _____ continue the pattern

write 143 Base 5 in Base 10

write 220 base 2 in base 10

draw the polygon at a 90 rotation about point A

draw the triangle across the reflective line

It is 5:07 and a bus that arrives every 4 minutes and every 9 minutes arrive at the same time, when will they arrive at the same time?

Draw a truth table and write in logical expression the statement “It is hot outside and raining”

there was only one hard part of my test, it was this thing where you had a list of symbols from all different time periods, Egyptian, Mayan, Roman, Greek, Babylonian and then you had a list of numbers on the column to the right 13, 103, 310, 130 ,etc i just guessed on that one - i did recognize the Roman symbol which was just CIII

i think im going to take Metric system next semester…im so sorry.

I’m rather intrigued about the answer to this question since the premise is impossible…

I’m betting he got that one wrong, rofl. :wink:

You have a “metric system” class? Dude, is your schools credits actually accepted at a real university? I’m not trying to be a jerk, but, uh, you better start looking at what you’re going to do after your’ done there, and plan for it. Otherwise, you might just find your credits not transferring.

oh shit didnt even catch that.

i remember we had a question in base values with the number 220 i didnt even think about what base it was and just threw a random one in there.

yes, my school’s credits are legit.

i have no idea what i want to do long term. but i have 1 semester left of school. soooo im figuring, i might as well just take the easy college-level math credits and just get my A.A. degree and if i decide what it is down the line i can just take those courses over again.

idk why everyone makes it such a huge deal, OMG YOU MIGHT HAVE 6 CREDITS THAT DONT TRANSFER!!! not the end of the world.
