2008 NBA Playoff Thread

My apologies for the delay in updates the last two nights, been having internet problems. Please forgive me.

Pretty impressed with the Suns play today to stave off elimination. If they played all series the way they played in Game 4, the series might be closer.

I think the Wizards, Nuggets, and Rockets are done. The Mavs and the Raptors might have an outside shot, but highly unlikely. The Hawks, although they won, will probably lose Game 4 and 5, but retool for next year.

So far, looks like the most interesting series is the Pistons-Sixers. Glad that the Sixers are playing good and making it a series, so it should be interesting to see how the Pistons respond.

Also, I was surprised to see how many teams had all five starters score in double figures. Good team ball played today.

Good wrapups. I think the Mavs are done, too, though. The Hornets are oozing confidence and I think they’ll close it out in Game 5.

Phoenix just staved off the inevitable…

Dude, I’m AT the library right now, that’s where I’m updating from HAHA. I was going to go to the library also last night to update, but the library was closed. Came here tonight just for this (and studying also).

On a really off note, I’m surprised no company has sponsored EJ’s Neat-O Stat of the Night at the end of the TNT postgame show. Suzuki sponsored it for two shows last year, then they didn’t do it anymore.

Even though it’s pretty late at night (usually after midnight eastern), even if Suzuki sponsored it, they can give away a product on one of the shows, and you can enter your information on the TNT website, and they will draw the winner on the show. If the winner doesn’t claim it within 24 hours, the product will be carried over to the next show until a winner claims it.

For the first round, give away an ATV. For the second round, give away a motorcycle, and for the third round, give away an automotive vehicle.

But that’s just me.

Stud of the Night: Dirk Nowitzki. The Mavs desperately needed a win to stay in the series, and they got it thanks to a huge game from their star, and are now in the series with some momentum.

Co-stud of the Night: Tony Parker. 41 points was actually his CAREER high. Not just Playoff career high. But the way he was moving made the Suns defense look like that wasn’t a typo.

But yes, Dirk had a huge game. Incredible performance.[/quote]

The reason I chose Dirk is because Dallas needed the win to have a chance of making it a series again, and Dirk did a phenomenal job of pulling his team together and leading the Mavs to a much needed win.

On a side note, did you just name a co-stud of the night on your own, without my permission? I’m the commissioner of this thread, I choose the stud(s) of the night. Unless I say otherwise, don’t ever do that again without my authority. I’m the boss here.

The previous paragraph was 100% sarcasm, nothing serious about it.

Yeah TP had a monster game, thanks for the correction on the career high, not just playoff career high.

A couple of nights ago they had GEICO sponsoring it. I missed it tonight though. But all this year, no one has sponsored it.

Actually, come to think of it, the GEICO thing was probably all a big joke/marketing kick. Because that was the night that Kenny jumped over the car a la Kobe.

A couple other companies have sponsored EJ’s Neat-O Stat of the night…

Wow. Major props to the Hawks.

What in the world is going on with the celts/hawks series. That seris should be over tonight. The celts need to close that series in six.

Holy shit! I’ve been out of touch all day with the scores and just realized what you meant. Wow. Series tied 2-2.

Orlando taking out the Raptors is no surprise, but I don’t think many people expected the Hawks to make a series of it.

Good call on the videoclip dracbest. I should have said ‘in general, Neat-O Stat of the Night goes unsponsored, or does not have a regular sponsor’

Yeah I agree. I think the C’s overlooked the Hawks, and the Hawks have nothing to lose, so they are playing all out, so I give them credit. Boston should have wrapped this up today with a sweep, but who would have thought the top two seeds in the East would be tied 2-2 when anything less of a Boston-Detroit Eastern Conference Final would be shocking.

Yeah Lakers.

Monday, April 28th Recap:

  1. Magic defeat 6) Raptors 102-92: Dwight Howard with another beastly performance (21 squared) and the Magic finish off the Raptors 4-1 and advance to the conference semifinals. Chris Bosh added 16 and 9 points, and the Raptors got strong play from their bench, but it wasn’t enough to extend the series another game.

  2. Hawks defeat 1) Celtics 97-92: Joe Johnson had 35 and 6 dimes, Josh Smith added 28 points and 7 blocks, and the upstart Hawks tie the series at 2-2. The Big 3 combined for 59 points, who are in total shock that the Hawks have made it a series.

  3. Lakers defeat 8) Nuggets 107-101: Kobe Bryant had 31 points, Pau Gasol added 21, and the Lakers make quick of the Nuggets and sweep the series 4-0. Allen Iverson had 22 points, and Carmelo Anthony added 21, but the Nuggets lack of defense sealed their playoff fate for this season.

Stud of the Night: Joe Johnson. 35 points, including 20 points in the fourth quarter (!), and the Hawks send the series back to Beantown in a tie series.

Honorary Stud of the Night: Dwight Howard. Three 20-20 games, and helping the Magic defeat the Raptors to advance to the next round warrants a SOTN award. The man child/beast/animal/raw talent/whatever you want to call him has the Magic going in the right direction, and has gained some momentum heading into the next round.

Happy as hell to see how the Lakers are playing. the Nuggets gave it a good effort but the Lakers wouldn’t be denied. Closed it out like champs.

Man, Joe Johnson was sick for the Hawks. He about broke a couple of dudes’ ankles on a couple of plays and then just drained shit in their faces. If it was the Hawks’ last stand, it sure was fun to watch.

Dwight Howard is a beast. What a star he would be in a major market.

In Game 3, Atlanta won by going bat-shit crazy from 3 point range, plus they outhustled Boston. They just wanted it more, and got it. Atlanta is also a lot more athletic team than Boston is, so it’s difficult for Boston to rein them in when Atlanta gets rolling.

But Game 4 was a bit of a different story.

I’m a Boston fan, so I’m not going to pretend to be fully objective about this particular series, but did any of you guys feel that the refs nailed Boston for every little ticky-tack violation in the book while letting Atlanta get away with murder?

The C’s got hit with two defensive 3 seconds; the ludicrous over-the-back in the 2nd half after Boston had forced a 24 second violation; the traveling call on Garnett in crunch time in the 4th when Garnett was literally not moving.

In addition, the refs seemed quick with the whistle when Atlanta had the ball, yet swallowed it when Boston was on O. Atlanta had a 33-18 edge in free throws attempts (and a 19 point edge in made FT’s, but that was partly because Boston clanged too many of their own attempts), and both teams seemed equally aggressive towards the basket to me.

In any event, wonderful plays by the Hawks combined with the large difference in FT’s for Atlanta and a staggering number of point-blank chipshots that Boston missed made the difference in Game 4.

Boston probably left at least 24 points on the floor combined from Games 3 and 4 with all those missed layups and putbacks. You don’t get the feeling that Boston is going to leave 10+ points worth of missed layups on the floor too many more times.

At the end of the day, it’s still 2-2, and I’m starting to get concerned, but both of Atlanta’s wins have a very flukey feel to them.
