That’s the right way to raise them. I only knew how to strip a 22 bolt action at that age.

Indeed. My old man never got me anything more than a BB gun. I shot a .22 a couple times at scout camp when I was 14 to get a merit badge. No wonder I barely qualified with my M16 when I get to boot camp. It took 4 years of shooting to get expert.
